Looking for any insight on dates for the 'must attend and complete New Student Indoctrination during summer prior to reporting to your assigned unit'... as I've culled through these threads, I see that this may only be the second year of this requirement. I'm not finding anything more specific, however, about the timeframe.

My DS has committed to an international mission trip this summer and before we make another payment (that will not be able to be refunded after 31Jan), I'm hoping to see if there will be a conflict.

Anyone?

This year they wrote that it would be in July, but I haven't found any specific dates yet either. Maybe going off of last year's schedule for now may help, which was July 23 - August 4.

I seem to recall seeing a post on here that it was at Great Lakes and is mandatory for everyone this year. Not sure how accurate that is as it wasn't an official source. Last year there were only a few select units who were sent there. Who knows for sure what they will do this year?

It might help to have your kid reach out to the unit to see what insight they might have.

Thanks! He has done that (along with a few more questions) but the CPT isn't replying as of yet. Still on vacation? ;)

Just thought I'd see if anyone else had some intel as I've exhausted all else. I will be patient and make a decision by end of January if no news surfaces.

Yes, I also read somewhere (in my research) that it was now mandatory for all units.

Based on my son's experience as an NROTC MO midshipman, the military is notorious for not deciding things until the "last minute". He never knew the dates of his summer training until mid-April at best. Definitely made it hard to plan for jobs over the summer, but he did manage to do so. He had to leave one of them earlier than planned which PO'ed a few folks, but by that point it didn't matter and he had warned them up front, he had to follow the orders of the Secretary of the Navy.

Yes, location is at Great Lakes. Plan is for two different sessions this year as all scholarship recipients will be required to attend. Ballpark dates: 3-24 July and 25 Jul - 15 August. Your DS will likely be sssigned a session vice having a choice.

DD just received her NROTC packet information today and I read that as well- Mandatory NSI at Great Lakes, IL. No dates noted, just that student must attend the session assigned. I'm a little concerned only because NROTC students at the school she's assigned to had to be on campus 1 week earlier than regular students from our experience a couple of years ago. If she gets the second session and it's close to the "ballpark" dates above, that will be cutting it close. A lot of colleges start near mid to late August. Hoping they take into account the colleges' fall start dates. A little nervous since we don't live near Great Lakes and DD daughter's college is out of state. Lots of logistics to figure out...

Does anyone know much about what it’ll be like? Is it supposed to be closer to Plebe summer? Are they giving you your uniforms then?

Yes, school start dates will be considered when assigning a session. The 'one week prior' you referenced was likely what most NROTC units call New Student Orientation. NSI is supposed to replace that.

Re: uniforms
Last year DS received one uniform at Indoc, his sea bag, and some workout clothes. You will be given a precise list of items to bring. Once in his NROTC unit other uniform items have been issued throughout the year to meet seasonal or activity needs. MIDs are instructed how to care, whether to tailor, etc., at the time of issue. But you can get a jump start by learning how to polish shoes and iron.

Study the document(s) sent to you in advance. Yes, you will be tested!

Last year was a trial program, and DS heard lots of talk about 3-weeks for the future. DS’s unit still had time for their own unit’s orientation before school started. DS needed to move in to his dorm early for this: unit and college had communicated, but DS also checked/confirmed. He missed his dorm’s 1st year student welcome program: no biggie, and his House Advisor helped him catch up.

Last year DS did not receive notification of the Indoc program until after mid-May, but he also received the NROTC scholarship in late April. Since there’s a May 1st college acceptance deadline involved, and plenty of unit switcheroos going on for 4th class MID candidates... I wouldn’t suggest expecting info this early as to what dates you’ll get. If you do... Lucky You!

Last year the 7 trial units were split into two groups (unaligned with their actual units). DS did not meet all his fellow unit members. Upperclass MIDs from their units (again mixed up, not by unit) were their detailers. Gunneys were also in charge of their training. It was a combo plebe summer & basic training program smooshed into two weeks.

Be prepared physically. DS says everyone ‘broke’ at some point. It wasn’t a “meet & greet”. It was tough, exciting, demanding and super interesting.... he loved it. Parents will love the letter that comes home.

If we’d asked DS at the end whether he’d rather be a Gunney when he “grew up” he might’ve said Yes. We didn’t ask. Gunneys make the Navy awesome.

DS also said Admirals set a very fast pace on runs... try to keep up, they’ve got 30 or more years on you and they’re speedy!

Watch (or tell your MID candidate to watch) youtube basic training vids as well as the above vid to know what to expect. DS’ unit retained all MIDs who went thru Indoc and they glided easily into NROTC. VERY valuable program, brilliant idea... exactly what was needed to kickstart DS’ Naval education and training. DS feels super lucky he got to do this.

I emphasize “last year” because the program is evolving and it’s reasonable to expect changes.

I should also mention DS had an opportunity to certify on certain weapon and swim qualifications (or however one properly says “he passed tests”).

This is good news to hear as I was trying to figure out if mine was going to report a week earlier than everyone else because of NROTC. His NROTC school actually starts after move-in date as his chosen college.

I did a google query for new midshipman summer indoc for 2019 and Vanderbilt's NROTC page had this info:

New Student Indoctrination
  • All students desiring to participate in Naval ROTC for the fall semester of 2019 are required to complete NROTC New Student Indoctrination (NSI) prior to the start of their 4/C (Freshmen) year.
  • NSI challenges midshipmen candidates mentally, morally, and physically through instruction in physical fitness, close order drill, swim qualifications, firefighting, line handling, and basic military customs, courtesies, traditions, and organization.
  • Cycle 1: 30 JUN - 24 JUL
  • Cycle 2: 25 JUL - 15 AUG

Our's took place during the first week of school plus labor day weekend.

Can you pick your cycle? Or is it assigned to you?
What did your unit say?
My own surmise is it's assigned but you can request a particular cycle. That's how things would normally work. It doesn't mean you'll get the cycle you requested though. Needs of the Navy and all that.

Saw this earlier in the week as well. My DS has requested first session through his OSO due to previous commitment at the end of July. Fingers crossed the request is granted without issue.

My son attended this last summer in July and August for two weeks. He said that this year it will be three weeks. They had to work kinks out last year as it was the first time they required it for scholarship recipients.
