Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel announced today that the president has made the following nomination:
Navy Rear Adm. Walter E. Carter Jr., nominated for appointment to the rank of vice admiral and for assignment as superintendent, U.S. Naval Academy, Annapolis, Maryland. Carter is currently serving as president, Naval War College, Newport, Rhode Island.

He was a pilot at the Navy Fighter Weapons School, or more colloquially known as Top Gun.

I like this.

Actually, he is a naval flight officer, served as a radar intercept officer or better known as a RIO. In the movie Top Gun, that was Goose.

He spoke at USCGA this year as the closing keynote speaker for our Ethics Forum. Great speaker that had a way of captivating the audience (which can be extremely difficult given a cadet's ability to sleep anywhere). Sounds like an awesome choice for Superintendent considering he is coming off a tour at the Naval War College.
