"New" USMC?

The book The Iraq War describes Gen. James Conway as, "big, buff, well read and well educated.....he represented all that was best about the new United States Marine Corps, which General Al Gray as the commandant had set up."

So what is the "new" USMC? What's all that is best about it?

I suspect the author is implying that General Conway is more cerebral than previous CMCs are given credit for. He still has the attitude though...Marines never lose that!

I can tell you one thing for sure about General Conway....33 years ago as a young Captain, he was sure tough to keep up with during PT! All leg and quite a runner.
