DS hopes to go AD upon commissioning. If his tuition is paid thru NG state tuition program, and he doesn't complete his initial contract with NG (because he commissioned AD), will he have to pay any of that money back to state/NG?

What has his ROO said about this?

I believe that repayment depends on the current policy of the State that he is in the Guard in. Over the years some States have required payback, some do not. Most AROTC detachments have a ARNG recruiter that works hand in hand with them, he/she would most likely have the most up to date information on any mandated State payback policy for ARNG SMP cadets going AD.

The main thing to avoid is accepting a GRFD or Minuteman Scholarship from the Guard, this will take active duty off the table from the start and there won't be a way for him to commission AD when he graduates.

I agree with Infantry_Dad, each state's NG operates differently and it would be very important that your son talks to the ROTC Battalion about all the SMP options before talking to a local recruiter. A local recruiter does not have the knowledge or experience with ROTC, there job is to get the person to enlist, if that's not done properly it could jeopardize any chance of AD when he commissions.

Bottom line....make sure he talks to the ROTC Battalion before he signs anything with a local recruiter.

I will reach out to the ROO directly. Thank you for the advice!
