Could someone explain self prep at NMMI? Does it really increase your chances for selection to an academy?

Hope these help.

An excerpt from the second reference says this: "Gaining admission to a Federal Service Academy is something you will have to work at and earn. There are a few things you can do to help yourself get an appointment and a few things that you may do to slow the process down, or halt it altogether. The service academies are very competitive and highly selective. Entrance quotas vary by academy, and vary year-to-year at any of the specific academies. Please do not think that gaining an appointment to a service academy takes a “cook book” or “checklist” approach. The service academies do not guarantee that you will receive an appointment. The decision is solely up to the academy and how you compare to other candidates on a nation-wide scale involving tens of thousands applicants.

Another quote is: "If you want to go to an Academy, you have a lot of work ahead of you. We can guide, advise, and recommend. You do the actual work. You are the only one who truly commands your own destiny."

Bottom line: We provide an optimum environment. Your abilities, motivation, and dedication are the deciding factors concerning your appointment.

As of now, NMMI is my top choice pending acceptance for the Fall 2011 term. I received TWE's from both the USAFA (WL) and USNA. My biggest question is whether or not NMMI (self prep) or any prep school for that matter would look better than a 4 yr university+ROTC when it comes to reapplying?
