I have heard good things about the New Mexico Military Institute's Academy Prep Program. Does anyone here have any input? Did they or a loved one go to NMMI?

JoeAmerican0921, my son attends school there now as a Self Prep for AFA (he only wants Air Force, so has not applied to any other academy!). He has yet to hear if he gets in to AFA, but they have really helped him in regards to the application process, reviewing his essays, improving his ACT/SAT test scores, etc. There are certainly more Self Preps there for Army/ USMMA. The nice thing about is if you don't get an appointment and wish to go the route of becoming an officer in the US Army, they have the Army ECP program through their AROTC. He has made close friends there this past year and knocked out his Freshman Year earning like 34 college credits or something, and if he doesn't get in to AFA he can transfer back home to our State University as a Sophmore and do AFROTC.

Not much to do in Roswell, but plenty of restaurants to choose from and there's always the UFO Museum :) but the campus is really beautiful and the dorm rooms are nice! No TV, but they issue you a laptop you can watch TV/ Movies on in your off time. Not sure where you reside, but traveling home for holidays can get pricey if you fly out of Roswell as it's a small transfer-type airport. They do provide bus service to ABQ during holiday breaks at a cost of $50 per one way trip. It was also affordable for us as they gave DS in-state tuition since his dad has past military service. They also gave him some scholarships that helped reduce cost. We would have considered MMI as well, but it really came down to a cost factor and NMMI is closer to our home state. My advice is start applying to NMMI and MMI now so you can see what they will offer you!

Congrats! We are hoping for the same ,but no word from USNA or USMMA yet?

Update: Turned down from USMMA. I will be attending NMMI this coming year.

Joe, from your posts I predict you will make the most of your NMMI opportunity, we’ll see your name in appointment offers for multiple SAs, and you will give back by offering deckplate advice for re-applicants.

UPDATE: Today I received an email stating I have a conditional acceptance to NMMI
My DD was offered an a sponsored prep spot at NMMI for USMMA last year. She received an appointment to USMMA for the class of 2023 and will be headed to KP in a month. My suggestions would be to listen to what Senior Chief says. He was super helpful and literally tells you exactly what you need to do to get your appointment. The reapplication process is a bit different, so trust that Senior Chief knows what he is doing when the timelines don't match with the Academy. Stay out of trouble and keep up with your classes. If you need help with classes ask for it, if the professor's can't help (or don't help the way you need) get an outside tutor asap! Stick with PT and make sure you work on it daily. Being that NMMI is high school, junior college and prep, prepare yourself to have to deal with high school kids getting the whole troop in trouble and having extra PT lol Overall it was a great experience for my DD, she has met some life long friends and will be better prepared for life at the Academy (not to say plebe year will be any easier in the least, but she will somewhat know what to expect) Good Luck to you and enjoy your time at NMMI!

I agree totally with what VBMom is saying. My DD was a sponsored prep at NMMI for USMMA two years ago. She is now a midshipmen. Listen to what Senior Chief has to say, he deals with all the academies on a regular basis. He is spot on when it comes to what you have to do. He always has an open ear whether it is a cadet or parent. Keep your nose clean. YOU will be better prepared for your plebe year, where-ever you are going! When people say a sponsored prep offer is a golden ticket...that's just what it is...you make the best of it and work hard, your in, period!

So My DS is headed to NMMI next week and we haven't bought a thing.... Anyone have any pointers? We are flying in from across the country and I was thinking we could just buy everything there. Also does he bring his cellphone on the first day and they take it for the first couple of weeks? How long is the indoc period? I have so many questions... LOL. I need some pointers and a way to relax.

If you're flying, it's best to get as much of the listed items as possible. I'm flying out of PA to attend and the only major stuff I am getting in Roswell are the liquids (detergents, cleaners), iron and ironing board, toiletries, and some classroom supplies that make my suitcase over weight limits. Walmart is your best bet if you have one near you, I got a lot of stuff there in an hour or 2 of shopping. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions!

for the NMMI PREP students, is there an actual graduation ceremony at the end of the program or do the cadets just go home?

there was no graduation ceremony when my son attended as a sponsored prep in 2016

I am currently a cadet at NMMI, the Prep Program at NMMI is excellent and the support that preps get is truly special. The Prep advisor really cares for his cadets and does his best to get you into the academy of your choice.

Thanks BradleyD4 for the information, my DD and I appreciate it and thank you for your willingness to serve this great nation.
