No Appointment or TWE....just Crickets

Nothing yet from KS-but would like to say that you don't have to be intimidated by USAFA. I was the first time around with our oldest who graduated a few years ago; so proud! Anyway once you have been a part of this special place you will find it has the nicest people I have ever had the privledge to meet; including the cadets, teachers, and staff. They all become part of a very small family that the cadets and their families are a part of forever. We keep in touch still with our son's sponsor family and also invited his LO to the graduation and that meant so much to him; no cadet had ever invited him. When the LO came out to the Academy every year they would always get together with another cadet from KS and eat supper. Our son really enjoyed that. What I'm saying is Moms, you don't have be afraid of calling your child's counselor-if they are agreeable. We've rarely called-only on very important things; and ours said we had a valid question about his status!
General Abrams once told our Academy Ball in Kansas City that he wanted to thank the Moms! He knew that most of these kids wouldn't have made it to the Academies without them-So Moms Rock! Keep up the support-from Dad's, etc, too; your won't believe how much they need to talk to someone back home when the cold, windy, dark days come-especially after Christmas in January. The cadets have a name for it but I can't remember it. So good luck everyone-us included!!!!

The Dark Days (Christmas-Recognition)

I just heard back from the academy this morning...

"Although you did not receive an appointment to the United States Air Force Academy Class of 2020, after additional review of your record, you are being offered a prestigious Falcon Foundation Scholarship to attend an Air Force Academy affiliated preparatory program for the Class of 2021."

While I'm obviously disappointed about not getting directly in to USAFA, I'm really excited about this. NWP was already my back up plan as a free agent, now this means that I am academy sponsored (kind of) and not a free agent anymore.

Does any one know if the FF Scholarship for NWP covers any tuition of the second semester at the civilian college?

No, the cost of the second semester at a civilian college is all on you. But NWP is a great experience. Congrats!

Also, select a local public university or community college for your second semester. There is no advantage to spending more money for an elite school. USAFA is looking for good grades in typical Doolie courses (e.g. Calculus, Chemistry) independent of where you attend. For Falcons, the college doesn't matter at this point .

I will probably go to University of Oklahoma even though I live in GA, because I can get in state tuition and not have to pay for room and board.

From KS-GREAT NEWS, FINALLY!!!! Our son has a Falcon Scholarship! I've been reading up on these on USAFA website-some on Admissions, but you need to look at usafa's website, then admissions, see Experience, use drop-down menu, see Falcon Scholarships. Read that, then see on the right hand side, Visit Falcon Foundation. That website is usafa.org/falconfoundation. There you can read about the prep schools they have listed-I assumed you pick one of those, but am not sure about others not on list. We didn't know anything about the Falcon Sch. when our first son was at USAFA. Most of the expenses will be paid-between the foundation and the prep schools. Thats what we were told by admissions. There's also an interesting chart that shows in past years the numbers of scholarships and appointments for Falcons. I hope this all makes sense-as I am shaking with excitement at this news!! The portal still says candidate-if all goes well he'll be in the USAFA Class of 2021!! Changing gears again-get used to it. Best of luck to all these great families and God Bless all of you!

My DS also was awarded the FFS and I'm currently researching the affiliated Prep Schools, NWP is the closest from us about 30 min away.

As soon as I get home, we will put everything on the table (UC Santa Cruz, AFROTC scholarship and FFS) to see what's best for him.

Congrats all you FFS awardees! I see no word of any Academy Prep offers. My DS received no emails to check portal and is still in candidate status. Do the academy prep offers come out after the FFS offers? Just hoping he is in line for some good news one way or the other. Anyone know if that's the historical trend? Thanks!

I chose NWP because Mr. and Mrs. Durbeck have been doing this for a long time (I think over 30 yrs) and they have an outstanding success record. They had 35+ AFA cadets either last year or the year before. I also have some good friends who went there and highly recommend it.

Does anyone know what determines why or who would gets a TWE, or FF? From the above post it seems as though the people left waiting have been those who were offered the FF, does that mean anyone who has already received a TWE wouldn't be offered a FF?
I know the answer for Prep.

From what I have read FF simply because there were too many candidates for slots open. They say prep is for those that need help in one area (Low SAT, GPA, etc ). Although, there are quite a few HS valedictorians this year at the prep. My DS is currently a preppie and is awaiting to see if he will receive an appointment. The waiting is excruciating, but at the same time, Ohhhh so worth it!!! Congrats to those that have received a FFS!!! For those still waiting, there have not been many prep slots given (from what I see posted). They could be awaiting those declining the AFA to offer you a slot and if they really want you, possibly prep or FFS. Fingers crossed!

MyDD got her Falcon Foundation Scholarship offer very early this morning. She is still listed as candidate status too. She is very excited and looking over the schools. Good luck everyone.

I wanted to give a shout out for NMMI as a Falcon option. Five years ago our son was where you are now. He and 7 other Falcons that year chose NMMI. It was a fantastic experience for them and all 8 are set to graduate June 2 with several going on to grad school before UPT. NMMI is a state land grant school but gives the Falcons in-state tuition. NMMI awarded him several scholarships the second semester that reduced our out of pocket educational expenses for the entire year to almost zero. Definitely worth a strong consideration. Good luck.

DS awarded FF scholarship this morning. I just happened to check portal, no email. Still listed as canidate. Not sure what he will do. AOL seems to think if you were given FF scholarship but not a TWE, then after they see how many people refuse their appointments there's still a chance.

Good luck to those who may be waiting still. Congrats to those who are FFS recipients. Son got nonselect letter this afternoon. For him to be in the company of such talented, driven and focused candidates was truly an honor. He feels the same way. God bless each of you in your endeavors! Thank you for wanting to serve this great country.

I'm just going to put this out there...Pretty much everyone has gotten their appointment, Falcon or TWE. What has not been seen in the last 6 weeks, is any real Prep appointments. I am seriously thinking that they have NOT made those decisions yet and that they will be coming from the TWE pool. The current Prep class has not gotten their appointments (that would be pretty normal) and I would say that would be the likely next step. Prep appointments from current class and Prep appointments for Class of 2021.

I do know of a candidate who received a prep appt a few weeks ago. That's not to say that more aren't coming, but there have been appts.
Keep in mind that you only see a fraction of appointees on these forums.
