No caller ID call from congressman?

I just received a no caller ID phone call from a lady claiming she worked for my Congressman who nominated me. I'm generally suspicious of no caller ID calls, so I muted myself and did not say anything throughout the duration of the call. The lady said she there was new information found regarding my character and fitness and that I need to call back and schedule an interview immediately. What does this mean? This seems very suspicious. What do I do?

Call a legitimate number on the Congressman’s website and ask to speak with that person. If the person’s name is not known to them, that tells you something. If she gets on the phone, you identify yourself and ask if she has any action items for you, just a general query. If she sounds baffled, that tells you something too. Close out the conversation and discuss next steps with your parents.

Update: I emailed the academy liaison for my congressman, and he said that no individual from their office has contacted me. Somebody must be playing some foul joke on me.

You were smart to pick up on it. I thought it may get be something along those lines. Be alert for anyone a bit too interested in your SA journey, and present your blandest, best and most serene game face, because people who do these types of mean things are looking for a reaction. It will drive them crazy if you don’t show a reaction.

That is very odd. You should inform your congressperson’s office as well as your RC. It sounds like your information may have been leaked somewhere along the line.

The military (and hopefully MOC office) should be concerned about the leak of PII.

My first thought was a school chum from HS who knew the OP and new enough about the OP to make a crank call.

i wonder what the phone # given by the caller who that reaches?

What actual scam would someone be running who got leaked or hacked info elsewhere And would make this kind of call?

This seems quite odd considering how many don’t get scam or trick calls like this. A one off?

Re leak of PII… it’s not that uncommon in this process unfortunately (re noms / MOC offices in particular I can speak with authority). A lot of emails get sent *not* BCC that include things like full name, email, district or school, and if that’s all that gets sent, you’re lucky - entire applications have been sent due to stupid mistakes by some kid who didn’t realize a setting was set to “anyone with link can view” or similar. At the end of the day the most junior staffers can get tasked with actually sending communications out and they’re sometimes not as careful or aware of need to check settings. This board has countless posts about this.

My personal fav: a recruiter that somehow connected dots somewhere, that my son might be interested in the military. Happened with all 3 of my military men. And they used my cell phone for their home number in high school, so I got the texts.

Always made me kind of chuckle. And respond ‘yes they are, they are xxx. Thank you’, it similar.

Info does get out.

I had someone steal my entire Congressional nomination application package and NOTHING ELSE out of my car. It’s ridiculous but it happens.
