No ice... not nice.

Cadets dining at Mitchell Hall have been drinking warm drinks for weeks, with no end in sight.

There will be no ice for the kids due to an administrative snafu or something.

Thank goodness the supe's office was finished before funds ran out, or whatever bureaucratic decision was made.

I guess they are just toughening up our future military officers.

As much as I hate to defend them, I feel somewhat of a need to clarify. The hiring freeze enacted upon Trump's inauguration has prevented Mitchell Hall from replacing lost employees which has tightened up their ability to operate at 100%. The freeze will be lifted after 90 days and all suspended services are expected to be resumed. Furthermore, the staff has been really good about chilling all the drinks and putting them out at the last minute which some cadets profess to prefer.

Do we think if they really tried that they could make it work? Yes. Do we understand they're squeezed right now? Also yes. It's just how it goes, haha.

I had to go to Duffle Blog first to make sure this wasn't a farce.

Help an old dog out... Is this a staffing issue affected by the hiring freeze or an equipment issue?

It's a staffing issue. They also cut a bunch of other stuff including Sunday waffle and omelet bars, daily morning yogurt bar, multiple lunch options several times a week, prepared desserts, etc. It's kind of a bummer.

DD was told the same, shortage of staff to get the buckets of ice for 4000+ Cadets

Now, you are just makin' stuff up. I know it is the Air Force but I think the cadets are o.k. without ice in their drinks.
They can chalk this up as preparation for future joint exercises or deployments with the Army or the Marine Corps.

Air Force and not putting their people first? Now that's a first!

That said, "people to get the buckets of ice"???

Unless of course, it is the Ice Bucket Challenge--which would make the zoomies heroes in the eyes of men and women suffering from a horrible disease and to the intrepid researchers racing to find a cure.

Most large commercial operations, including restaurants, have separate machines that make ice and another one that only dispenses ice. Ice has to be carried from one to the other, typically in 5 gallon buckets.

In addition, for each meal someone puts a bucket of ice on every table, of which Mitchell Hall has upwards of 400.

Well! If I want to drink without ice, I'd rather do it in a European restaurant, where you're lucky to get one cube in your drink. :)

See, they are preparing the cadets for the challenges of future service at Ramstein.

Funny how it wasn't a Cadet that started this thread, yet a Cadet is defending the situation and not complaining. Our DD only mentioned it in passing; more bummed about the waffles:(
