Hi,

Can someone point me how a junior become part of a JROTC if it is not offered by the high school.?

Thank a lot

I don't have advice about JROTC specifically, but DS is in the same boat. He joined the Sea Cadets. Check out www.seacadets.org to see if there is a unit near you. If you are a junior now, you will be starting late, but you can still learn something about the Navy and attend a summer training before you graduate.

If a student is "home schooled" and a high school (that the student would normally attend) has JROTC, they should be able to enroll. If there's no JROTC at that school...there's not much you can do about it. If the student is looking for something like JROTC for the experience of wearing a uniform, conforming to rules, learning about aviation, etc., then they might take a look at the Civil Air Patrol (CAP).

Thank you Steve. Truth be told, I as a parent was never aware of JROTC, ROTC, SA till my DD got a letter from WP inviting her to look at WP. I was always under the impression that Military is for ‘certain type’ of student, kids from military families only. I am an immigrant to this wonderful country ( 2 decades), so military was never in the radar.

I never knew that my DD would be so interested in WP ( the culture, challenge, quality of education, leadership and chance to serve ) till she visited website, spoke to a USMA alumni. She is a junior at HS, she may be little late to party, but I have never seen her so much determined, her grit to catch-up and meet all the requirements for admission application.

Some of you might find me asking some basic level questions, pls pardon. But I appreciate everyone on this forum who has helped me get upto speed in helping me understand the full process.

Thank you all..

My DS is in second year of NJROTC. At least in his school, NJROTC is a one period a day class (Naval Science 1, Naval Science 2, etc.) for four years. In addition, there are after school NJROTC clubs (that are all optional), including: Drill (armed, unarmed, reg. and exposition), athletic comp., orienteering, rifle team and color guard. Also, there is community service and fund raising.

I think you would need to attend the one period a day classroom work in order to be in the program. I will ask the Naval Science Instructors about whether there is any way that a non-enrolled student can participate, but I kinda doubt it. As others have pointed out, there are other activities like Civil Air Patrol and Sea Cadets that are good too.
