I posted this on CollegeConfidential, so I'm sure some have seen my paranoia first hand. But I wanted to post here to get as many opinions as possible.

I'm currently applying for the class of 2012, and am physically/medically qualified, and have received 2 or 3 nominations (I have to call one Senator to confirm; long story. But 2 at the least). Anyway, I'm not from a very competitive region, so the nominations aren't REALLY hard to get. But it's still nice to be chosen by more than one person.

The last word I received from USNA was during the DoDMERB process in late August. I attended NASS, but haven't had an invitation to CVW. Nor have I had any letter stating that I am scholastically/triple qualified.

Some basic stats:

3.3 GPA unweighted (3.7 weighted)

650 Math, 630 Verbal, 690 Writing (shame they won't count it)

Rank: 44/335

Note: School uses semesters, so according to my BGO, they are converted into years for academy requirements. Taken hardest classes available each year (Honors/AP/Honors Advanced), 5 'years' of English, 6 of foreign language, 5 of math, 5 of History, 7 of Sciences (4 were lab based). Took AP History, taking AP English and Calculus next semester (those being the only AP courses our school offers besides Computer Science).

So, I have two questions:

1.) Is it normal to wait this long and hear nothing? And if it is, when can I expect to hear back now that my application is entirely completed?

2.) Does my brief overview of an application look like it could qualify? I would be especially thankful if a BGO could weigh in.

Thanks.

Academically you look very similar to my son, as far as SAT (1290) and GPA
(3.67). The students I have heard of having LOA's seem to have that "little something extra." By this I mean great ECs with leadership, phenomenal grades, or athletics. Like so many others have stated, very few LOA's have gone out (or will go out), so don't sweat it. I had a question last week and called admissions; they did not bite...I would expect you would not be bitten either if you picked up the phone and called.

that looks almost identical to my profile last year (i had a little higher gpa, but everything else is the same)

how are your extracirriculars and sports? CFA?

You can ask all the oldies here....

i didn't hear ANYTHING for a looooonnnnggg time. finally called by RO in like March and got offered NAPS, which is where I'm at now.

Just be PATIENT.
that's the hardest part of all this.

I may have replied to you on CC but will do so again. And I'm a BGO.

and have received 2 or 3 nominations

That's excellent!

Yes, it's normal to wait this long. In fact, most candidates won't hear anything until at least February. Those who hear earlier are usually (1) highly qualified and/or (2) lucky. CGO reviews records on a rolling basis. This time of year is when most people complete their applications, so the backup starts to increase. And, although you may have heard you received a nom, your MOC may not have sent that information to USNA -- it's not due until Jan. 31. And so CGO may not have the official notification they need to give you an appointment.

The strength of your application must be considered in the context of where you live. If you are in a non-competitive region, quite frankly, you may not need as strong a packet as someone in a very competitive region. In my area (VERY competitive), you could have a tough time with the stats you've provided but I have seen a number of candidates with similar qualificatons (based on what you provided) receive appointments. In a less competitive region, your application may compare very favorably to other candidates. My guess is that it's probably not strong enough to get you an LOA; that said, I've been wrong many times. Also, USNA gives out very few LOAs, so not receiving one is no big deal.

However, even BGOs can only give you limited guidance. Much depends on the overall strength of your application, the quality of applicants in your region, the quality of applicants nationally, etc. It sounds trite, but you won't know until you receive the appointment letter or rejection letter. And for that, unfortunately, you just have to wait.

And a year from now you won't remember NAPS. But you will remember how easy Plebe summer was.

Hey Napsters....stop holding hands in the streets of Newport. A Napster and his lady friend were just walking down the street, all lovey-dovey. He was wearing black, so someone else can handle that, but had he been in blue, the car would have been stopped and a very kind tender reminder would have gone out to a shipmate about PDA. Looks sloppy.

Napsters are well prepared for Swab/Plebe Summer and really helped out their platoons mates because they had "been there, done that" however some of the Napsters in my class lost a lot of focus after that summer. Of the...I'm guessing 15ish Napsters, maybe 5 graduated.

We always got our butts handed to us in JV soccer against those guys/girls.

Good luck!

are you sure that it was a napster? (not defending us, we do tend to do stupid things) we haven't worn uniforms on liberty since the end of september. we wear civies. could it have been OCS?

I forgot OCS moved back to Newport. You may be correct because it was after Sept. I am sorry for the mistake.

Keep on doing what you're doing then, haha!:thumb:

Just received word that I was indeed nominated by all three MOCs, and that my application hasn't gone before the review board yet. I suppose that's a good thing, seeing as I haven't been rejected or waitlisted yet. Hah.
