Hello everyone, I was recently looking through the USMA Appointment List and noticed that a lot of people have military connections through family members. (Presidential/Service Connected) I come from an immigrant household where only one of my parents is a U.S citizen, the other is here on green card. I'm a first-generation American, interested in giving back to a country that gave my family so much. Will not having any connections hurt me when hoping to be appointed to the academy? Thank you for your thoughts.

“Connections” have very little influence today. Most MOC’s use the “competitive process” for nominations. Most candidates rise or fall on their own merits as far as Admissions. I applaud your desire to serve and wish you good luck.

Hi there! No need to have any military connections, just a desire to serve the country as an officer of the military. Actually I feel that one of the reasons my son received an appointment was the fact that he talked about his commitment to serve this great nation because of our immigrant background. He talked about his love and appreciation for the freedom we enjoy. Both my husband and I are naturalized citizens. Best of luck with your application 🙏

This will get you plenty far, both for your background in admissions and mentality.

The things you're seeing concern the nomination process. CC's with parents in service can get a nomination through that source. However, they will still compete with you in your congressional district and in your senator's slates. None of my immediate family members served, and I won the nominations of both my Senator and Congressman. I obviously received an appointment or I wouldn't be telling you this. Your story will get you those nominations so long as your grades and other things are solid; you have nothing to worry about in regards to this.

Thank you so much for sharing, after seeing a few more posts I realized that it's something that I shouldn't worry about!

As mentioned above you'll be fine. I have a similar reason behind my desire to serve. My grandfather was liberated from a Nazi concentration camp by the United States military. He ended up living in Israel but was always grateful to the US for his liberation, serving is my way of showing gratitude. I do not have any military connections either.

Best of luck!!
