No Nomination from Obama

Well--one down--received my letter from Obama's office today. Not good news. They apparently did not even do interviews this year--which is not surprising. I am wondering though what the stats were of someone who did receive a nom from his committee. I have my congressional interview tomorrow tomorrow but I live in a very competitive district, so even though I have been triple q'd by both USAFA and USNA, and look great on paper, it is not looking good in the nomination department. Anyone else interviewing with Captain Lovell's committee in the 10th district tomorrow for a Navy nom? My CGO at USNA called yesterday and told me that I was a great candidate and even if I did not receive a nom, I would still have a chance because I would be put in a "national pool." Very disheartening though--was at USNA for candidate visit last weekend and was very optimistic.

I do not understand why you think it is not looking good in the nomination department?
With a senator nomination you have two senators for the whole state. With your congressman you are only competing against those in your district - though I am willing to grant that some district are more competitive than others.
If you look that good on paper you have an excellent chance of winning a nomination.
Again - there is nothing magical about receiving a senatorial nomination or a nomination from a particularly famous senator. Admissions only cares if you have one.

I am not sure why your CGO would say you would go in the "national pool" without a nomination. The "National pool" is reserved for those with a nomination but do not win the top appointment.

The bottom line is - go in positive. Assume that the nomination is yours to lose. Relax and have a great interview!

One is required to designate an SA choice. The academy for which I have received an LOA is the academy for which I applied for the Senatorial nominations. I am not likely to receive the other one either. And the VP is as we all know, a long shot. I did not receive an LOA for USNA, that being said, our Rep is a Navy grad and we live in the most competitive district in a very competitive state, so most of his SSC interview will be with USNA applicants. The chips will fall where they fall......

Good luck!! You'll do great :D
Just think positively...
(if you go in in the mood you're in now, won't make a good impression... shape up! You want this, you got this.)
I'm also coming from the Chicago area -- IL-09

ps - "top appointment"??

The fact that your rep is a navy grad makes no difference - the MOC still sets a slate up for each SA. If you are a good candidate - then have confidence in yourself. You got an LOA from a SA - that tells you that you are no slouch. Maybe I misunderstood your post, but it kind of sounds like you are implying the MOC is more interested in USNA kids .... I can assure you that is not the case. Or - maybe you are implying that you expect there to be more USNA applicants? Either way - the MOC submits a slate of 10 nominees. You just have to be one of those ten... I don't understand one thing though - do you want a nom only to USNA or are you also seeking a nom to whichever SA gave you the LOA? Without a nom, an LOA looses a whole lot of value!

I am as confused as 2011's Mom.

I take it you have a LOA to USAFA but applied for a USNA nom to your congressman?
Such is the hazard of applying to more than one academy.
Relax though, I have never heard of a candidate with an LOA not getting an appointment due to failure to gain a nom from their MOC.
This is one place that VP and Superintendent nominations are used.
It ain't over 'till it's over.

To answer your questions, I split my nomination requests as our MOC's allow only one choice per applicant. I requested two for USNA and one for USAFA. I have been eliminated from one Senator's (USNA) pool. We know for a fact there are many more USNA applicants vying for nominations than any of the other SA's in our rep's district--which is where my remaining USNA nom request is. We are not sure if he submits a primary or slate--in any case it is clearly a numbers game.
As far as the LOA, because I split my nominations and the other nom (the USAFA) request went to the remaining Senator, I am down to a very big pool for a senatorial nomination. His review board does not meet until the first week in December. However I did speak to my AGO from Air Force today and was told that regardless of the nomination outcome, they will attempt in every way possible to work with me in getting a nomination. Complicated stuff!!!!

i got my USAFA nom from Obama last monday. i know having the LOA helped a lot. anyway u were looking for stats on nominees from obama so here goes...

-4.21 GPA (weighted), lots of honors, 3 AP this year, 34 ACT(34 Math, 32 Science, 34 english, 35 reading, 11/12 writing)2050 SAT,

Hmmmm--very similar, doubt the CFA is a factor for the noms--no service trips though-I have a lot of other service. Who knows??? Could be a regional issue (where are you from?)
Mine was for USNA, not sure if the number of applications was a factor at all- My MOC interview went well, but lots of candidate in that pool as well. Durbin does not look at his until early December, but if the numbers are similar, could be the same issue. Congrats on your nom........

duh. no the CFA doesnt matter to the MOC. im from suburban chicago, the edge of the western suburbs actually. and at least for obama and durbin they take the whole state. im sure me having an LOA helped a lot. Im sure his office was pretty rushed, so sorry if you got shafted by that. also mebe there were a lot more people trying for USNA that USAFA. who knows...

It doesn't really - esp if the candidate show athleticism and fitness. Medical doesn't and should not.
Many kids don't even have their CFA done yet nor are they medically qualified yet.

My daughter didn't do her CFA until Jan and she didn't get her medical waiver until March and she got a nomination in December.

The nomination committee doesn't see the academy application. They generally don't ask you CFA scores (I have never heard of this in a nom application) and would not know them unless the candidate told them.
With medical - IMO NO candidate should discuss a medical DQ with a nominating committee. They should not ask - this is NOT their call and their are privacy issues. This is left to DoDMERB and the waiver authorities.

Just a Mom's totally correct - the nom committee has no idea about the medical stuff. The SA does not tell the MOC if the candidate is DQ'd or not. The MOC does get a notice when cleared but the fact that a candidate has not cleared DoDMRB never never never impacts a nom - the MOC has no way to know if they didn't clear DoDMRB yet because of a medical issue or if the candidate hasn't gone to the doc yet. I know of no MOC offices that ever discuss the med issue. The med issue is absolutely a non-issue where the nom is concerned. I am aware of instances where a candidate tells the MOC their med status but the MOC staffer will typically do everything in their power to avoid that conversation. Getting a nom without med clearance occurs all the time... Medical status is an absolute do not discuss topic for all MOC's/Staffers and nom committees...
