My son did not receive a nomination. What happens now? Is it over? What about prep school? When are you invited to attend prep school if that’s an option?

My son did not receive a nomination last year and instead won an AROTC scholarship. This year received congressional and rotc nomination for USMA. So it’s not over unless you don’t try again. As far as for this year, without a nomination one can not be considered for admissions to academy or prep school.

Don't give up. Is his application complete? Then you are in the pipeline for things like AOG scholarship for a year at one of the prep programs. Also, there are VP noms--who knows when those are given and how.
However, now is the time to focus on other schools and scholarships. Did he hear about his Army ROTC scholarship yet? (Because why would he apply to West Point and not apply to Army ROTC. Maybe the second board is not released). You need to recognize that it is not over until it shows up in the mail or on his portal--and he could be waiting for almost three more months.

You do not need a Nomination to go to the Prep Schools. However, the Academy has to select him for it. Some kids that go to Prep had Noms some do not. Don't bank on it. Dr. Mom is correct.. he is not done, but should really shift focus on back up plans. My DS has back up plans for his back up plans. Until they are there on I Day Be it the Academy or Prep anything can happen.

Please see above link to West Point page directly. You do need a nomination for the USMAPS. I went through this with my son last year.

Interesting USAFA Prep is different then. At USAFA they do NOT need a Nom..

so your son can research the option of an unsponsored civil prep program. check out Marion military academy.

There are many ways to compete for an appointment next year. There is not a one size fits all approach.

Please make sure you evaluate all of the options and see how they may work for your son.

Prep/AOG Scholarships are "golden tickets" but attending a civilian prep school unsponsored will not give you a better chance next year than ROTC at a regular college.

If your son is academically prepared and mature enough with good time management skills, I would suggest that a year at a prep school is a waste. He should go to a college with an ROTC program and do perform well.

Now, if he does not have a strongest academic background or lacks some maturity, a year at a prep school may be just what he needs.

only thing I will add is depending on your situation self sponsored prep would not be a waste. my 2018 son is about to graduate with at least 2 self sponsored prep cadets. best thing to do is for your son to explore all options and decide for himself the right path.

I would be curious to know how many self sponsored candidates do not get in the next year. There are no guarantees for Self Sponsored Prep candidates and that year would waste a year of college if you do not get in. Very little you take at Prep would help toward your degree. I am also not sure which prep schools have actual ROTC programs that would qualify for an ROTC nomination. Each situation is different and while we all have opinions, each candidate needs to pick what works for them.

If this is truly his dream, keep at it. My son didn't get in on the first try.

I don't know about the others but MMI does award ROTC nominations. MY DS received one this year but since he got the call from his MOC I am assuming that when he was slotted the ROTC nom was not used.

@Parent of 4 that’s not necessarily the case. Our Congressman called #3 when he was accepted to USAFA and the Congressman had not given him a nomination. When he got into USMA, no one called—just the BFE surprise laying on the rainy front steps of our house. So you don’t really know.

Thanks for all the responses. His application has been completed since August. He received a letter from MOC stating he was not selected for a nomination. This is all new for us. We missed the deadline for Arotc scholarship. We live in a highly competitive area. Prep school was our last hope. He will go onto plan B. He will go where he is meant to be.

Did he apply for all available nominations? and received rejections from all? If he received a rejection from only one MOC he still has two more to hear from assuming he applied to all 3 nomination sources in your state ..plus as stated above if he applied for a VP nomination there is still that chance

There are limited circumstances when admissions will shift nominations from a MoC whose nomination will otherwise go unused. The MoC has to consent, of course. It’s not common, but it does happen. The Superintendent also has a limited number he can make. http://www.west-point.org/academy/malo-wa/educators/noms.html
It’s not a lot of hope, but until the TWE arrives, there is still hope. Have Plan B ready.

Mom4 is right...could be someone on the slate isn't medically qualified and your DS could now be added...worth asking. The prep school is for non-academically qualified applicants...so that's not an option, but he should ask RC is AOG is an option.

I agree. My DD was 3Q last year without nomination. She was then notified she was accepted. When she asked RC about source of nomination, she was told that USMA have a few internal sources that they could use. She was not a recruited athlete.
