No Nomination - What Next

You’re better off with an LOA and no nom than a Nom and no LOA. Thats for sure

Maybe. A strong candidate on a weak slate with a nom might be better.

I suspect it would depend on why there wasn’t a nom. Was there a red flag that the MOC committee or BGO caught? Was it a competitive district which would mean to me find a spot.

There has been a lot going on in Washington lately, and the Iowa caucus is today. I'm guessing that if she's waiting for a nomination from Senator Chuck Schumer, her nomination may wait until the paperwork catches up.

Is it possible for his nomination's still not to be out yet? i am in the same spot without a nomination

The deadline was Friday. Today is Monday. I would think that it would completely make sense that nom's submitted on a Friday could take a few days to get posted yet this week. Not sure if admissions work weekends or not. Kind of hope they don't for their sake! So if you haven't been notified yay or nay by your MOC, then it could still be forthcoming I would think. Not all MOC's notify their slate candidates. Sometimes you find out as a post on your portal. SURPRISE!!

Can only speak to last years cycle, but I know of two individuals (in Florida, friends of our sons) that were not formally notified of their MOC noms until late March. They are "supposed" to be in to the academies by 1/31, but if the MOC doesn't get it in on time what recourse do academies have? None that I am aware of, especially if that or those MOC's are busy doing something else like campaigning or fundraising or the "committee" members were busy or on vacation. Both individuals last cycle thought they were done for without a nom, but all of a sudden it popped into their portals, then they got emails or letters shortly after (one got appointed to USAFA the other did not get an appointment but had Plan B in place). So keep on working forward, and remember it isn't done till reporting day!!! :)

Our family has ties to rowing in the PacNW area. "Lwrower45" handle piqued my interest (Lake Washington). I just figured to ask the question here before going to a PM. DD has been out here a couple of times during Thanksgiving to speak to prospective candidates, pretty sure she'd want to touch base with any candidate who is a rower from our area.

Sadly, some MOCs do not notify candidates that they have not been selected for a nom (sorry for the double negative). IOW, the noms may be out but you may not know you weren't selected b/c the MOC failed to tell you. If you have not received any notice by now, I suggest the candidate contact the MOC's nominations coordinator and ask if the decision on noms has been made and if the noms have been submitted to the SAs. If the person answers in the affirmative, the candidate might say, "I've not received any notification. Does that mean I did not receive a nom? [or] I've not received any notification. Could you let me know my status?" If the slate has not been submitted (or decisions not yet made), you might ask if all candidates -- successful and not -- will be notified and (depending on the friendliness of the coordinator), when this notification might come.

Also, I can guarantee you that in some states and districts, it is harder to secure a nom than it is to secure an appointment in other districts and states. It's about numbers, not qualifications. There may be 200 super qualified candidates in a district in California and only 8 in the entire state of Montana. In Montana, you're guaranteed a nom and your chances are now 1 of 8 to win your slate and be appointed (maybe even higher b/c you likely have 3 noms). In CA, your chance is 1/20 just to get a nom. Then 1/10 to win your slate. So, 1 of 200. Both candidates may be super well qualified but the odds for one are certainly better.

LWRower is a NY-based rower, and will happily answer rowing questions.
