No NROTC Marine Option Scholarship for Me

Just found out, unofficially, that I did not receive the 4 year NROTC Marine Option Scholarship I applied for. The local Marine Recruiter is now trying to contact me about enlisting lol(which I definitely don't want to do). I'll most likely try to find out more information about the PLC Program so I can apply for that around Sophomore or Junior year of college. I most likely won't be pursuing anything with the NROTC program into college. So yeah, thank you to everyone that gave me insight about any inquiries I had, it was greatly appreciated. I have no hard feelings at all to anyone or anything, just determination to commission in the United States Marine Corps.

Gabe, I am so sorry. It is disappointing. With the Marine Corps, ROTC is not a major source of commissioning so that you run up against the tyranny of small numbers. You are right to pursue PLC. You will want to communicate primarily with an officer recruiter (OSO). Keep pressing on and good luck.

I know that you have probably been stalking the Marines.Com page...but just in case you need to get your moto on after this momentary set back:

Thank you for the link. And I'm not too down in the dumps right now since, as you just stated, the NROTC program isn't as big of a commissioning source for USMC Officers compared to the PLC or OCC Programs. So I still do have hope. Thank you again though

Gabe, the other thing I would add...in the Marine Corps you can grow up and be Commandant from PLC or OSC. Unlike in some of the other services where your odds of making it to the very top are increased by attending a service academy, the Marine Corps is wide open. You will rise based on your leadership ability--and level of physical fitness!

That is very true indeed. Thanks again!

That's certainly a tough break, and I'm sorry to hear it. Keep working towards your goal, and in 4 short years you'll be in the same exact place as those who did get the scholarship.

If you don't mind me asking, how were you notified?

Tough break Gabe! I was rooting for you. I hope you keep an open mind regarding NROTC over the next few months while yo continue to investigate PLC. I feel NROTC is the surest path to a commission and you would still have PLC available as a backup to that. But you know what's best in your circumstances. I wish you good luck and every success. It's been a pleasure chatting with you via these forums.

I am sorry you didn't win this round, I was rooting for you too.

If commissioning as a Marine Corps officer is what you want keep pursuing it. I'd really recommend you go to a college with a Marine unit there.

You can apply for NROTC MO again this summer for the early board in October and still win the four year. You can also apply for PLC at the same time. And apply again after that.

When a door closes, keep kicking it until it opens. That's how doors work [emoji12]

Yes it was a pleasure. Thank you for all of the insight that you gave me!

You said you were district 1 correct? Can I ask how you found out and what state you are from?

State: New York

I found out because a Marine Recruiter, who really wants me to enlist lol, called me and told me he pulled some strings and found out "unofficially" that I did not receive the NROTC MO Scholarship. I didn't even ask him to do that for me, he just did it by his own intuition and called to tel me about it. Very odd situation

My son's coordinator emailed( his whole list of guys) that they can't release results till the first week in April. I guess he has been getting a lot of emails asking if he knows anything. We are NH

That goes for every applicant in the 1st Marine Corps District(no results until April)?

Some of these recruiters stop at nothing to get you to enlist haha

Hey folks, let's be careful here. The vast majority of Recruiters are honorable and hard working Marines in an exceptionally difficult job. They fill a vital role and are often the top of their class. There can be issues but it is rare. Often, it is miscommunication by one or both parties. The best approach is to educate yourself so that navigating the options is clear and trouble-free.
