We have hit below zero temps. A blizzard is coming. It’s SOUP WEATHER!!

Hit me up with your favorite fireside soup. Bonus points for easy. I’ll start (but looking for new ideas…).

Potato Bacon 🥓 (oof, there I said it!) Chowder 🤤

Do you like 15 bean soup? I’ve got a slow cooker version that comes out after Thanksgiving to March. Crumbled bacon is available to add at table. Very flexible for adding leftover cooked protein. Easy to assemble and let go all day.

Can DM you with it later if desired, or if others want, will post here.

Over the Top Chili...but the same weather is hitting here , and I won't be able to make it on the Big Green Egg this week.

I love traditional French Onion, a labor of love to be sure. Kids love my loaded baked potato soup, and I will always be ready to eat hearty beef barley.

Crusty fresh home made bread is a must. And extra bacon for the potato soup.

DH swears one of the big reasons I like to make the loaded baked potato soup in the big pot is because I can break out the jumbo pro stick blender and purée that sucker into velvet bliss before adding back the chunky stuff.

Another one to google, the cheese soup recipe from the Canadian restaurant at EPCOT. It is fabulous! Yes, of course it has bacon.

@Capt MJ of course, you would have the Jumbo Pro stick blender. Why am I not surprised? I will have to try the Disney recipe, haven't made a cheddar soup before. Thank you for sharing.

Hmmmmmm….chili on the big green egg? We are fans and also have one. So very curious!

I also have a brainlessly easy steak chili slow cooker recipe that: a) the mids love after a cold football game with the house cheddar sour cream mini corn muffins, b) won a MCB Quantico Chili Cook-Off, prepared by a sponsor family alum assigned there for duty who “borrowed” the recipe, and c) I am almost embarrassed to post. Raise a hand if interested.

Fair warning - most of my soups and stews and chilis are the 8 qt pot or the “Fleet-size” 7 or 8 qt slow cooker. Adjust as needed.

I'm partial to DW's split pea soup with bacon mixed in. It doen't have to be freezing out side for that. Her turkey soup isn't bad either. Stay warm "up there."

Slow cooker ham bone soup. Growing up we always had this after Thanksgiving and Christmas, my mom using the left over ham Jone and throwing in beans, potatoes, etc. so I always associated this with cold weather comfort food.
Dump the stuff in a slow cooker the day after and let it cook all day.

Sorry, I did not list the things for ham bone soup. You can obviously Google different ways of making it.
This is a great soup for getting rid of Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner left overs.
Obviously the ham bone. Some recipes say to rinse it off, I don’t. If it will be a few days you can freeze the ham bone, then defrost it when you’re ready. But this defeats the purpose of using ham bone soup to get rid of leftovers.
Put it in the crockpot.
Cut up potatoes into soup size and put them in.
Add enough chicken broth to cover the ham bone and potatoes.
Beans- I use red kidney beans, other recipes call for white beans. Put in the ones you like. I drain my beans but don’t rinse them. Some recipes cal for rinsing them to cut down on salt.
Left over chicken gravy? Use that as a soup thickener and to add flavor.
Left over carrots and celery from a vegetable snack tray? Dice them and put them in. Left over cooked vegetables? Put them in towards the end of cooking, unless you’re from the south where “these peas are over cooked” is not part of your vocabulary. If green beans, cut them up to soup size. Left over corn also is a good addition. Also add some diced onion.
It probably won’t need salt, but you might want some.
Peper. Bay leaves. Thyme.
I like the richness butter adds to a soupy so throw some of that in.
About an hour or two before done, take out the ham bone. Let it cool. Cut off all the meat you like and put it back in the pot. This is when I put peas in so they don’t get mushy. See above if you’re from the south.
It’s a soup, so you can put the crockpot on high if you don’t have much time. I have the stuff ready the night prior and put it together in the morning then cook it on low.
Goes well with dark bread or hard rolls/bread and butter.

Ohhh.... it's so hard to choose. I make so many different soups, but the one I make most often is lentil with ham, starting out by rendering some salt pork (which is related to bacon, right?). I also make a vegetarian version for my sweet and lovely, but misguided, daughter-in-law. :)
