Nom Interview questions?

What is a failure that you have had in your life? Why do you consider it a failure? What did you learn from it?

Huh I don't know if they would be interested in hearing about "proofiness" and the way numbers trick you. Personal finance for anyone wondering why I'm reading this.

Favorite cookbook and why...

Oh, that's a toughie...

Cooking with the Master Chef - Michel Roux Jr.
The French Revolution; 140 Classic Recipes made Fresh and Simple - Michel Roux Jr.
Monica's Kitchen: Exciting Home Cooking for All Occasions - Monica Galetti (Roux's sous chef)

These are some of mine, I'll wait to see CaptMJ's. It's tough because I have a BUNCH!!

FYI...Monica's cookbook wasn't too much when she published it; now it's stupidly expensive!

This lemming is not going over the cliff with @flieger83 here in the AFA Forum thread on noms due to a mis-read by @Twins4us .

I’ll head over to Off-Topic and start one. Given that the Bacon, Cocktail, Everything Drawer, Best COVID Meme and other popular off-topics are still bubbling, I figure this one will bring out the SAF home cook coterie.

I agree with hopeful25..KNOW your essays and your application.
honor code, core values.
”Have you ever had to make a choice when you knew it would be easier, even though it would be wrong? Like, stopping a red light even though there is NOONE around, and you know you wouldn’t get caught? “ Again, honor code...)
”name a time you used leadership to inspire others”
and here is my post from a different thread which asked - are there any trick questions..?....
my answer:

Yes.
I am a mom of DS
One member of the interview panel said she had a serious question....
”How do you feel about shaving your hair?”
I think, this breaks the ice and let’s everyone relax a bit, and have a chuckle.
But the next question was tough.
“How would you feel about putting yourself in harms way and dying for your country?, or leading someone else in harms way?”
whew!!
that's a loaded question for a 17 y/o
But....
You’re a leader... you’ve got this. :)

good luck

The "trick" to these interviews?

1. Be yourself!!
2. Do NOT try "canned" answers, don't "tell them what you think they want to hear."
3. Do NOT be afraid to say "I don't know" to a question that you really don't know the answer to! They may have asked one knowing that you wouldn't know it and want to see how you answer it: do you make something up, or do you say "I don't know."
4. Be able to answer this: "Why should we go out and tell all the other applicants that they can go home, we don't need to do any more interviews, you're it?" This is a bit of a sticky question: are you humble, do you undersell yourself, or? My advice...extol your talents while explaining that you don't know the other candidates so you can't speak for their qualifications, but this is why YOU believe YOU are the best choice.
5. Be yourself!!

Oh, did I say that again?

Relax (I know, tough to do) and understand that these folks are not there to make you look foolish, to pick you apart, or to do anything other than what they've been asked to do: interview you, get to know some things about you, and then create a picture of you such that at the end of the day, they can sit and say: "Okay...we just did 31 interviews...all amazing young men and women...now we have to pick...let's start on candidate #1..." and they can look at your "picture" and say "Oh yeah, I remember him/her...I really liked how...."

What flieger83 said ^^^^

Each board is going to be different. Its different states, different districts, different boards. Sometimes there will be active duty or Reserve Officers on it, sometimes retired military - enlisted and officer. There is not set of questions they will ask that are shared. Be ready for standard interview questions. Know your essays. Spend 20 mins thinking what questions might be unique to a military interview - commitment, sacrifice, character. Have some examples that demonstrate your leadership, commitment, integrity as well as your desire to attend.

Most of these boards have people own them that have done it for years. There is no trick, there is no magic bullet. They know what hey are doing. And remember of you feel like you had a bad go of it (it probably wasn't as bad as you thought), you likely have two more chances to improve.

Just had my congressal interview and I have a friend who went to the same one. They only had one question that stayed the same between the two of us.

What one word would describe you?

My interviewers were both woman and called me out because I said my role models were my brother and uncle and she said is that because I can’t follow woman.
I hope you are trolling. If not, in an attempt to give them the benefit of the doubt, perhaps they were trying to rattle you and see how you respond. I would find that to be an inappropriate remark in an interview assuming it was presented just as you relayed.

No it just caught me off guard and I responded ok but I felt like it wasn’t a question that I should of been asked

Wow, you all received some fun questions, I really got some of the most basic questions and mainly questioned about my academics clubs and job experience and why I wanted to join and it was all over in around 10-15min.

How do you feel about the interview being so short? My senator interview was around 40min but my congressional was 20min. I was a bit surprised and my reasoning is that they were not interested.

Honestly speaking, at first I was like ok I guess its all over for me now but then again short interviews aren't necessarily bad, because considering how elaborative I was I think they got what they needed and I really hoped it was longer because I really wanted to give them a better understanding of me but I guess there was a large volume of candidates.
