My DS received a Congressional Nomination and recently received an invitation to a Service Academy Nomination Ceremony. According to the invite, the kids who received nominations will be recognized and given a certificate for their achievement as well as have opportunities to meet our Congresswoman and Academy Liaisons. I think this is a wonderful honor and highly recommend my DS attend, the family is invited as well. Here's the dilemma...my DS is the captain of his Lacrosse team and they have a game that evening so he has already said he would not be able to attend the nomination ceremony. Am I crazy to think that he's absurd! I appreciate his commitment to his team but he will not be a professional Lacrosse player! He wants to be a Marine Officer. Any parental advice is welcomed!

Your DS probably prefers a ceremony for an appointment rather than a nomination. In the absence of the former, he is fulfilling his duty as leader of his team.

There are going to be plenty of ceremonies over the coming months. If he gets the BFE his BGO or someone else will more than likely do a presentation at his awards night (if the school allows it). Honestly, if this was me many years ago and I had a game, I would go to the game. I see it as him being committed to his team. If he gets an appointment/or has one, there will plenty of fanfare. A nom is nice and all, but the appointment is the end game. Ultimately your family/he needs to do what is best for your/his situation.

OK NavyHoops and truenorth...he win's this one! I respect your opinions and in my heart I know he's right. It's all about leadership and there is no better place to begin than showing commitment to your team. He's already taught us a thing or two... Thanks so much!

We had our MOC ceremony. Some kids were unable to attend. In one case, the parents were there and accepted the certificate for the nominee.

I agree with your DS decision. Being honored by his congressman for his achievement is great but, it is the nomination that is important. Supporting and leading his team is much more important. His is putting team ahead of self. BZ

Your son made the right decision to not attend. Those are primarily photo-ops for the MOC and since he already has a NOM, they really mean little toward the real goal of getting an appointment.

Without a doubt, your DS made the right decision. As a Captain of his team, he not only performs on the field, but off of it as well. He is a leader and motivator of his teammates and they look to him for inspiration and guidance. These are the exact qualities and attributes that the service academies want to see from their candidates. God willing, he will have many other ceremonies to look forward to.

I like the idea of accepting the certificate on his behalf. Thanks for all the great advice and yes, appointment to USNA or NAPS are his ultimate goal!
