Pro tip for future applicants looking at this thread: tell your teachers you need their letter a week before the due date.

Glad DS got it all in on time!

What is the 4th stream that requires an interview? 2 Senators, 1 Rep . . . is the other ROTC??

The same happened for my son a couple years ago—
One of his recommendations came in at just the last minute, barely in time to submit all his congressional applications. He had requested his recommendations to be submitted weeks before they were due, but one person just didn’t get it done. It takes a lot of time and work to write a formal letter of recommendation and to assemble it properly as required, and I am not discounting why it was difficult to complete this step. It was kind of his mentors to write letters for him. But certainly various aspects of this application process are out of the control of the candidate and caused a lot of sleeplessness that year…

In retrospect, perhaps he should have asked for an extra one or two recommendation letters as backups, in case one of his others didn’t come through in time.

The above poster makes an excellent point in terms of choosing your recommenders wisely. Some (such as teachers) are mandatory. You don't become a junior / senior h.s. teacher without knowing a wide variety college recs are part of your life, so I don't have any sympathy for them.

However, when choosing someone else, think about how much time that person likely has, how committed they are to you (in terms of making sure they get it done on time), etc. In that regard, someone who knows you really well and would do anything for you might be better than someone with a "big name" who wants to make it a priority but it just isn't.

Also, if you're ever asked to write a (non-mandatory) recommendation, consider whether YOU have the time to do it. I was once asked to write one for someone I didn't know all that well during a time when I was absolutely swamped. It's HARD to say "no," so most people agree as I did. Then they get into a bind, as I did. FYI, I did it but it wasn't my best work by far. I shouldn't have been asked and I should have politely declined.

How does it work then? (My guess is an online application)
The service academy handles all the admin and selection for the online submission. No VP staff are actively involved. Only a tiny handful of appointments can be charged to this nom source.

They are usually given out quite late in the cycle, and anecdotally, given to candidates they want but who have not been able to secure a nom from another source.
