Nomination Interviews

How long do MOC committees usually take to decide noms? I'm guessing usually depends on the number of applicants.

Our MOC's coordinate nominations, so even though they may be done with the interviews in Nov, they don't plan on releasing their nominations until late January.

While on the other hand I was called by my MOC the next day, so it depends on the state as well as the MOC.

What state is that where the nominations are coordinated? Does that happen often?

Many states' MOC's will "coordinate" their nominations.

I have been a board member for my MOC, now a senator, for 7 years. We always coordinated with our compatriots on the USNA/USMMA/USMA boards...if we wanted someone badly, and they had us first, then we told the others and they didn't nominate them.

The pre-coordinating allows us to give the most nominations to the most people.

Does that help?

My DS (from Wisconsin) has completed interviews with Congressman and both Senators. He is an West Point SAP Student at MMI so they were able to set up phone interviews this year. Last year he did received confirmation of his congressional nomination Mid-December. Expect it to be about the same time frame.

DS just received his nomination from Senator Cruz (no interview, office called over the phone) for USAFA on 11/19/13 :thumb:

DS just had his interview with Congressman Weber (14th Congressional district) on 11/22/13.

Senator Cornyn office emailed stating the board was reviewing applications today and will email a letter regarding nominations sometime afterwards. (so, I guess no interview).

DS received Presidential nominations for both USAFA and USNA too but was advised to seek all others to increase his chances for appointment (especially since he's applying to both academies).

Thanks, flieger83. I understand the rationale behind coordinating, but does that happen even before interviews take place? In other words, would a candidate receive an invitation to interview from one MOC and not the others specifically because of pre-screening, or does all the "talking and sorting" happen afterwards? I was also wondering which states choose that method and which do not. I know that in NY, if the candidates receive a nomination from one, they are supposed to notify the other MOCs.

I have not seen that here in my state. That's not to say others don't do that, but we haven't as far as I know. I do know that for MY MOC/Senator...we/he doesn't do that.

Example of what we DO do here. Today we interviewed a bunch of amazing young men and women for my Senator. A few of them...on their packages it said: "Cong XXXXX or Sen YYYY has a nom for this person for USMA/USAFA/USNA/USMMA."

Meaning that they already have a nomination, but the candidate doesn't know that yet. With that...we didn't offer them the same nomination. BUT I know of one young person that has (and doesn't know it yet) a nomination to one SA coming from their MOC...and we highly recommended a nomination to a different SA because of their qualifications.

So...things do happen, differently and unique to each MOC and state.

Even within a state it's up to each MOC. KS Senators' time between interviews & notification was ~3 weeks; congressman's time was Saturday interview & Monday letter in the mail (2 days). Be patient -- you'll find out one way or another, by phone, e-mail or letter in the mail.
