I want to start writing my letter for a congressional nomination for the AFA. I have talked to my counselor for colleges and have some information, but I don't really know where to begin or how I should go about writing this letter. Does anyone have any information or any websites that might show me the type of format or what sort of information I should include in this letter?

Thanks for the help.

Quick question: Are you writing this for your application next year? Because I think it may be a little too late to seek out a congressional nomination for class of 2011.

When writing you could do the whole "Why I deserve to attend AFA" schpeel (what i did lol) it works, but dont be afraid to put a little heart into your letter. I could explain what "heart" is but seeing as how you want to attend a service academy I assume you already have a good idea.

Uhhm... sound intelligent, confident and strong, even if what you say goes against your congressman's political views, it shows your untimid and have a strong resolve. Write about what exactly you want to do as a commissioned officer in the Air Force and more importantly, how you will go about doing it and getting there. Try not to be too cockey, I know its hard but there is a fine line between highlighting yourself and undermining other candidates.

I dont know if it was wise on my part mentioning my plan B of Norwich University and Army ROTC as it may have diminished whatever confidence Idisplayed, but also gives a "steadfast, never quit" feel.

AND MOST IMPORTANTLY!!!!!!
be prompt :thumb: , dont be like me and wait until your rep doesnt have any nominations left to give out :yllol:  :shake:

Before you spend too much time on a letter, go to the web sites for your Senators and Congressional representative and download the application for nomination for each. Applications will ask an essay question and probably have some short answer questions. Once you know what you'll address in those, you may know better what you want to emphasize in your cover letter. Good luck!

Also, I'll disagree slightly with the above. I'd stay away from anything too political at this point. JMO.

Thanks everyone I have all the info I need for nominations. Your replies helped a lot and I talked to a friend on my lacrosse team who is applying to the Naval Academy. And I don't think I am too late for nominations because I graduate high school in '08 and college in 2012

Ok your starting at just the right time for a 2012 Nomination (i did it in late october =( )

Good advice. :thumb:

This is exactly what you should do.

I did this in the summer and I just said how much I really wanted to go to the academy and asked if I could come and see them in the office. When I talked to the coordinator she said that I would put my name on a list, and that I would receive an application as soon as they start sending them out. Sure enough, today I received the application for the congressional nomination. Good advice already posted above though.
