So my DS received a nomination for the Naval Academy and West Point. We don't know if it's a principle or not. What exactly does that mean?

That if he is 3Q for USNA and USMA, he has a chance to be appointed by either.

So his chances have just increased, but still no guarantee? He's waiting on a medical waiver for a small spot of eczema on the bend of his arm so he's not 3Qd so..... what you are saying is we just have to wait and see 😅 I

Here in MD they appear not to give a nomination to a student for 2 academies. They make you choose. I believe it's a bad policy not to give a kid choices.

My DS had to choose in NJ also but our congressman gave him a nomination to both USNA and USMA. Good luck!

My son had to rank the academies in order of preference for Steny Hoyer. For Van Hollen and Cardin, he had to pick one academy to interview for. I'm not positive, but I've heard the offices communicate with each other as to not give multiple nominations to the same academy to one applicant.

My son received a nom to USAFA (second preference) from Hoyer, nothing from Van Hollen or Cardin.

We had AF as 1st choice and got the nomination from Raskin but have heard nothing from Van Hollen or Cardin either..... In my opinion the offices talking to each other taints the process.

Different MOC's do things differently..:) Some coordinate to "spread the wealth" others may give three noms to one candidate. Depends entirely on the MOC and their policies. But if someone is waiting for a medical waiver, the Nom means that IF you get that waiver, then you can be appointed, but a lot depends on the type of Nom; Principle, competitive slate, non-competitive slate, Presidential, SC, VP, Sup, AD/Reserve, etc. IMHO it is more "filling out the class" how they want it, than the type of nom. If they want you, they will find a way to get you, short of an un-waiverable medical condition.

Some talk, some don't. And some don't "listen" (do what they want regardless of what the others do). The theory behind MOCs communicating with each other is that, in very competitive regions, as many candidates as possible should have the opportunity to attend a SA. They take the view that giving one person 2 noms takes away from the opportunity of another person to attend a SA -- thus, one more unhappy constituent. If you consider that, in some areas, there are upwards of 500 candidates competing for 10 noms per SA . . . it makes a certain sense.

I agree that the choice simply comes earlier in the process. I recognize that some candidates may not have attended a CVW or may o/w still be deciding between or among SAs. If you live in a super-competitive area, you may need to move up your decision point. If you're somewhat ambivalent (would be equally happy at 2 SAs that require noms), you can always tell the nom committee that, "I put X first, but would also love to attend Y if I received a nom to that SA." May or may not make a difference.

As for whether a nom is "principal," you need to check with the SA coordinator at the MOC's office where you received a nom. I think the MD noms are competitive (not principal) but could be mistaken about that. That simply means the MOC leaves the choice up to the individual SAs.

My daughter received 3 nom’s on her portal. We know one was from a Senator, but haven’t received anything for the other two. The nom’s are listed as OR04, OR61 & OR62. Does anyone have insight as to what these mean? Thanks!
