Nomination Question

Here in Maryland the 3 offices appear to talk about the nominations they are giving. My son interviewed with all 3 senator/congressman AND marked USAAF as choice #1 for all 3. He has only heard back from 1 of the Senators' with a Nomination to USAAF.. Should we just sit back on the other 2 ? This seems strange that they talk which may preclude a kid getting a nomination to multiple SA and have choices. Thoughts?

Not strange at all. That's the DMV! Very competitive. "There can be only one." (nomination....stealing a quote from Highlander) Seriously all your son can do is wait for responses, knowing that he put forth his best packages.

It’s very common for state elected officials to collaborate and agree to not dupe noms, or only give 1 nom to any academy regardless of how many were applied to. They want to “spread the wealth.”

Thanks Guys... Is it safe to assume the other 2 MOC will not give a nomination to my son since he has the AF ?
Lastly- I'm still trying to determine his chances of Appointment now that he has the NOM. He is 3Q.. Eagle , Capt, 4.5 gpa. Sat was not great 1240

Good GPA. How do you know he is academically qualified? 1140 is below average for SAT.

Being a candidate does not give 3Q status. 1240 is still slightly below average. I believe that was the minimum qualifying score for AFROTC scholarships.

How would we know he is academically qualified?
He must have enough - he got the NOM .

A nomination does not indicate 3Q. Only the USAFA knows, unless they've told him or he has an LOA. Candidates know if they are medically and physically qualified. I believe that USAFA does not notify of academic Q unless LOA or appointment given.

Only the SA determines if a candidate is fully qualified scholastically (all the academic stuff plus evaluation of ECAs, etc.), medically (DODMERB qualified and any required waivers given) and physically (passed CFA).

USMA, I believe, tells its candidates when they are 3Q. It is not USNA’s policy to inform candidates of their fully qualified status. I’m hazy on what the others do.

The elected officials’ noms are expressions of their confidence in the candidate, but it is the SA who makes the fully qualified decision and offers the appointment. A nom is a required punch list item, though a very important one.

You might find this good reading to get an overview of various moving parts:

Thank you.. We have come to the conclusion that he has it ALL but SAT might be the back breaker.. Just so competitive ..
I do remember when visiting the USNA they clearly stated " we don't want a school full of smart kids " we want well rounded kids.. It lead me to understand that 1 doesn't have to be a rocket scientist to get in.

You are right, they want well rounded kids. But they want well rounded kids who can handle the academics. 1240 is not a deal breaker, but there is more to that. Doesn’t need to be answered here, but they will look at what math classes he took, what was his math SAT, did he take and thrive in the hardest courses the school offered, what do his teacher evals says, etc. They are going to look at many factors. The bottom line is every kid admitted is well rounded and many have very exceptional scores. He is in the game until he is told he is not. Good luck to your son!

You say he has a 4.5 gpa. Is that the reconfigured one that is listed on the USAFA portal or his current weighted gpa according to his high school?

I've spoken to the counselor at the Academy and been told he is academically qualified. He would not go to committee if he wasn't

If they told him he was academically/scholastically qualified, and he has a green check next to CFA and medical, then he is probably 3Q. I'm not aware that USAFA Admissions or the ALOs inform candidates about the proposed or actual time of their file review. DD2's ALO only said that USAFA would continue to offer appointments to qualified candidates over the next 3-4 months.

It really is a waiting game. You simply cannot reason it all out in your mind. Period.
