Nomination question

Hi everyone, I have a question about the service academies prep school and nomination as a Varsity athlete.

So when you grab your nomination and appointment. How do you know if you are going to the prep school or not?

Also, if my SAT/ACT scores aren't up to par yet, should I still submit them with my nomination applications?

You have a few concepts jumbled together here. Not surprising, because this is a complex process.

Nomination. A parallel process, something you need to have from one of the nomination sources, to be offered an appointment, along with being fully qualified. Refresh on the nom info at the SA website and read the Sticky post at the very top of the Nominations forum here on SAF.

Offers of appointment. Made to those who are fully qualified (CFA, DoDMERB, scholastically [academics, leadership, etc.]) who have a nom.

Prep school. If you are offered either the Academy prep school or a sponsored prep school scholarship, that usually means the SA did not find you fully qualified, usually for academic reasons. If they offer you a prep option, they not likely to offer you an appointment (though some tiny handful of people on the very bubble might get their prep offer changed to an appointment near the end of the cycle). Offer of prep means the SA is essentially saving a seat for you in the next class, if you successfully complete prep, remain medically and physically qualified and obtain a nom in the next cycle, and reapply.

If any application asks for scores as a required item, I don’t recommend omitting them.

So you can get a nomination if you're not fully qualified, but no LOA.? And of course, if you ARE fully qualified, you will get the LOA along with the Nomination?

Nomination process runs parallel to application process.

You can obtain a nom, but that does not guarantee an appointment.

You can be fully qualified with a nom, but that doesn’t guarantee an appointment.

Thousands each year become fully qualified and gain nominations, but are not offered appointments.

A Letter of Assurance (LOA) is not an offer of appointment. It is a letter sent to certain candidates that assures an offer of appointment if certain conditions are met, for example, obtaining a nom or passing the CFA. The majority of appointees do not get an LOA, but an offer of appointment.

I realize you are new to SAF, and very welcome. Please take the time to read the Sticky posts at the top of various forums, use the Search function to find the hundreds of threads on all the questions you have been asking.

If you haven’t read every page, drop down and link on the SA websites, your primary source for official information, it’s a good time to refresh yourself on that info. You should be very clear on the process at this point if you are actively applying.
