Nomination

Congratulations! Now a few questions- Senator or congressman? How long ago was her interview? How was she notified?

Another CT. DD Class of 2011 is now Marine Captain. Go to the parents meet and greet at the Capitol. They will have current Mids there that can answer many questions. Join the club if you are not already a member as they are a great bunch of people. Fair Winds and Following Seas. Good luck and you will love watching her do pushups after every Navy score.

Congrats.
The big question..oft overlooked, is it Principal or Competitive ?
Either way, its one of the tickets that needs to be punched to stay in the game, but if a competitive nomination, DD still has to get through the funnel. Be prepared for a long wait, as USNA cannot evaluate the MOC slate until all applications have been submitted.

Competitive it is. I recall my DS getting it 4 years ago but at that time the MOC's were all on the same page that if a candidate got a nomination he / she would not get a 2nd. When my DS received his they let him know he would not interview for another. That didn't happen this year. My DD was not told this would happen and as of right now she will interview again with the other senator and then our congressman. We shall see if that changes.

First of all, congratulations! I am wondering why would your DS need another nomination? Is she applying to more than one academy? It would seem counterproductive to have more than one nomination, no?

This line of discussion comes up every year. The general thinking is that, yes, an applicant needs only 1 nom - but - it’s prudent to apply for all noms for which eligible, so at a minimum, MOC, Senatorial, VP, and others with special eligibility requirements. This gives the SA maximum flexibility to consider an applicant from the perspective of different nom sources. If the candidate does not “win” his/her slate with the MOC nom, there are other opportunities for consideration. I am not touching the whole “National Pool” chapter in this thread, but there is plenty of reading about that. There is a regular poster here who uses a great lottery ticket parallel: 1 lottery ticket = 1 chance. Multiple lottery tickets = more chances.

I suspect that every Congressional Delegation is different, and it depends largely upon the level of communication between the MOC (and perhaps party affiliations). I attended one of our Senator's Service Academy Open House forums this summer, and was discussing with the Staffer that handles nominations, and she indicated that they do compare and coordinate nominations with the other Senator in the State (another R) to ensure the widest distribution of Nominations. I didn't ask, but strongly suspect that there is little if any coordination between my Districts Congressmen and the two Senators.

That being said ... even if the MOC's compare notes and only grant one nomination per person, you don't know which one is going to nominate you ...so apply for all sources. I like the lottery ticket analogy, but the more accurate rationale is that the more nominations you have, the greater the chances of Admissions matching you to an available nomination. (The example I use is -say you are the #2 person in your Congressman's slate, but the same two people are ranked #1 & 2 on the Senator's slate --one gets in under the Senator's seat, and one gets in under the Congressman's seat).

Yip, as expected the 2nd senator has canceled my DD's interview congratulating her on her other nomination. Waiting to see if the congressman will do the same.

Congress person in CT does not coordinate with Senator nominations although both Senators do. Senators alternate interview months and request that if you get a nomination from the first interview you withdraw from the next interview. DD had LOA, Senate and Congressional nominations. Good luck to your DD.

Unless something changed the Congressman called my DS to congratulate him on his Senators nomination and that they would cancel his interview. That was 4 years ago so we shall see if they do the same thing.
