Nominations FAQ

I apologize if I missed it in the thread, what month(s) does one typically seek a nomination? Also, how does the process change if seeking a nom from a Senator who is losing his/her seat... or do you approach the newly elected Senator in early January after they are sworn in. This seems to be cutting the process a bit close.
To second @2025Candidate 's post, the Maryland nominations have roughly the same schedule. One senator and my representative had the applications for nominations due on Sep 30th and Oct 1st respectively. The second senator had his application due on Nov 1st (quite a bit later). All of my congressmen opened their applications early summer with the first application opened on April 28th. My interviews were all held in late November/ early December although some on the forum have posted regarding interviews in the past couple of weeks.

In regards to your second question, most Congressmen/women will not require you to resubmit applications or redo interviews. Here's a thread from 2018 that lays it out pretty well: https://www.serviceacademyforums.com/index.php?threads/moc-up-for-re-election.64223/

Couldn't find the answer to the following question in the Sticky:
My application process for a Congressional Nom. included being interviewed by my Rep. plus a team of military personnel. However, neither senator required an interview at all in their application process. In this case, would the congressional nomination hold more weight than the senatorial nomination?

All Nominations are equal in weight and you only need one to be appointed.

Had my Congressional nomination interview back in October and still have yet to hear back regarding the status of my nomination... my candidate portal still shows a blank for that portion although my application has been submitted and is under review. Do they have more time with the newly extended deadline? All help is greatly appreciated.

Based on DD USNA experience, your file can still be under review even if no nomination is awarded. She received LOA and is pending a nomination. My DD did not get any nom from any MOC sources and has applied VP nom. She is in touch with her state admission counselor.

If your MOC interviews happened back in Oct and your portal is still no updated, you can follow couple of paths.

1. Contact your MOC and ask about status
2. Contact SA and inquire about status
3. If you are applying USNA, there is live Q&A, you can ask your question on that platform.

What is a MOC? at this time the lady who administered the interviews is out of the office. Yes it’s for the USNA. That’s the thing I was never told whether or not I received a nomination and was also told it could be a good thing that I haven’t heard back yet. I’ll be sure to do that! Definitely surprised I haven’t heard back yet after all this time but then again it’s a lengthy process... Thank you!

There is a handy Acronym List on the home page here.

So given that’s it’s been 5 months it might be safe to say I did not acquire a nomination.
First I would reach out to the admin in the MOC's office who coordinated the interview. Also you could you search the appointment lists on this forum to see if others in your state, maybe even district have been appointed. (I just entered the name of my state to see any conversations that involved it) Also google to see if there have been any press release from MOC or even blurbs about the candidates who may have received them. In my DS experience, some are great about informing those who got a nom, and other not so great in letting those who did not get the nom know this. Good luck!

Thank you for the helpful information!, I’ll be sure to do that.

Definitely reach out to your MOC and Senators! However as someone who applied to USNA last year and didn't receive a nomination from any source, if you haven't heard back from now, I would start preparing for Plan B and C. I know a lot of people talk about the VP nomination, but IMO you have a better chance of getting struck by lighting than receiving a nom from that source. Doesn't mean it's impossible though, a 2025 applicant to West Point said they received it via this forum.

As a college applicant I know how competitive it is. I’ve had this dream since I was invited to CVW my sophomore year of hs back in 2016... I’ll have my AA in the fall I haven’t really thought about universities but I think it would be beneficial to transfer to one and declare a major and take the STEM courses Plebes take at the academy. Since my plans have changed from pursuing a degree in music education to now just getting my AA I have no idea what I wish to study instead at this time luckily, I’ll have some time to figure these things out after graduation and will diligently construct that efficient back up plan as it might be a few application cycles before earning my place in Annapolis. Gotta remember it’s about the journey NOT the destination! Plan to do whatever it takes to get there even if it’s 2-3 years from now.

I am sure you are keeping an eye on the max age limit to enter.

MOC was the only interview acquired as the rest were rejections. I’ll ask and see if letters were sent out and figure out what the deal is regarding mine.

Have you looked into Navy ROTC? That route will also get you to the same place that USNA is preparing its candidates for. There might be more advantages to that, many of your credits so far will probably transfer and you won't have to start your college career completely over.

Not for college. I was in NJROTC in high school and truly had the best time. I know for college it’s different but would positively impact my chances of a direct appointment in the future. Should I consider this as a possible option after graduation? should it be a local college or something closer to MD? of course cost is a major deciding factor.

So here’s a fun question… ( short story to follow) the SA coordinator from my MOC called me yesterday to say they have MISPLACED my nomination application. ( aka they don’t know where it is) I was very good about mailing things several months before they were due as this isn’t my first rodeo. Has this happened to anyone before?

During our DS application cycle, his local member of Congress was not at the helm. They were in rehab. The staff was very nice, but it was a *$*% show. The night before the interviews, multiple applicants received calls asking for their nomination applications (mind you, they must have submitted them as they were scheduled to interview). Kids were scrambling, parents were melting down. It was a disaster. Morning of the interviews, I spoke with a mom in the parking lot. Her son was at a prep school in NM and had submitted his application months ago. He actually got a call the morning of and asked why he wasn't interviewing in person?? It had been a scheduled zoom meeting (he was out of state) and they lost all track of that info. She was beside herself, understandably.
It was chaos. In the end, worked out for my kiddo but it sure wasn't a good look for the MOC's office.
