Nominations FAQ

From the USAFA Instructions to Candidates "Nominations do not carry over to the next year. If you are not appointed and want to apply for the following year’s class you will have to initiate nomination and admissions processes again."

I can only speak for NAPS (USNA's prep school). NAPSters are required to apply for noms. However, if they don't receive one, they will be given a SecNav nom. So, yes, you must reapply but the pressure is off, so to speak. I assume it's similar at USAFA, but am not certain.

Curious how recruited athletes fit into the nomination process? Are they automatically given a nomination by MOC or charged to an alternate source? Do they have to compete the same way as a regular applicant?

A recruited athlete must have a nomination to be appointed to a SA. No, they are not automatically given a nomination by the MOC. The MOC Nom process is separate from an application process and are completely owned by each MOC. The coaches will ask a recruit to apply to all nomination sources available. There is a category of Superintendent's Nomination source which is very limited (at USNA its 50) that some top of the line recruits can be given. These are the best of the best. So unless you are the #1 recruit for a top team, such as football or basketball, don't count on this. As a recruited athlete, plan to apply for all Noms available; VP, Senators and your Congressman.

I have a question and it may have been covered elsewhere but I havent found it. My son has gone from "hoping" he gets a MOC nomination, to now we have 2, one from the State Rep, the other from a Senator. My son had marked on his app, that he was interested in both the USMA and the USNA. The Rep has nominated him for the USMA, West Point. My son was a competitive candidate at the USMA, and we have been told he is receiving an appointment ( it all happened in less than a month) The Senator, who took longer now has also nominated him, but for the USNA, at Annapolis. My Question:

While my son would be happy at either academy, I think in his heart he wants the USNA. If he accepts the Senators nomination, will this in any way negate what he already has received. ( Ill add the letter from the USMA, for the appointment, hasnt been signed, nor has arrived, the Rep told us its in the mail by the USMA)

This happens every year. The academies do not discuss candidates like that. Numerous applicants apply, get nominated and receive appointments to multiple academies. He needs to follow his heart as he is the one who will have to live with the choices.

Their will be nothing negative about turning one down. Well except maybe from old grads who know there is just one true military academy. Beat Navy

He can definitely accept the Senator's Nom, and it will not negate any offer from USMA under his Rep Nom to USMA. When my kids received early Presidential appointments to USNA, they informed their MOC panels, and they ended up giving them nominations to USAFA. In the case of my #3, she was given a nom to both USAFA and USNA from the same MOC, and she received appointments to both.

I'm just curious do all MOC slots get filled? If a MOC has a slot open and they have submitted a slate does their slot definatley get filled?

99 times out of 100 the slot gets filled. I suppose there are times when all the folks who received a nomination are not qualified for whatever reason. Some congressmen do not submit any nominations.

If I have recieved a nom but found out that I didn't get an appointment, and I plan on reapplying do I need to apply for another nom or am I able to use the one I was previously given?

@ldavenport2 Yes. You will need to apply for another nomination(s) for your re-application. Nominations do NOT carry over.

My MOC's all ask which academy is my first choice on the applications. Do I select the same one for all three application or do I spread the choices? My heart is torn between USAFA and USNA. Since USAFA accepted me to its summer program, I am leaning toward it. I am afraid to put "all eggs in one basket" and fail to get any nomination.

your choice really... your representative most likely is the one that may grant multiple nominations since competition is not as fierce as compared to the senators. in PA our rep let DS rank the ones he would attend if appointed. Senators he had to choose 1.

Every year there are people who gamed the system, telling one MOC they preferred academy A, and their Senator they preferred Academy B. However, what they really wanted was academy A, but they only end up with a nom to academy B. My own opinion is to decide which academy, and more importantly military "career" that you want, and then tell them all the same. There is no point to gaming the system. Decide what you want and chase that. Just one man's opinion.

Here's my view . . . imagine that you have noms to 2 SAs. You are presented an envelop and on a piece of paper inside is written the name of the one SA to which you've now been appointed. If you're thrilled no matter which SA is on that sheet of paper, then go ahead and "split" your noms -- list one as a preference with one MOC and another as your preference with a different MOC.

However, if you will be disappointed if one of the SAs is on that sheet of paper, then put all your eggs in one basket for the one you really want. List that one first everywhere and make clear that SA is your #1 choice. Period.

Trying to convince yourself that you'll be happy at a SA you don't really want to attend usually doesn't work out well.

In our district, our representative is up for re-election, Am I right in assuming(bad word, I know) that if he loses, the new MOC will not take office until 2019, that he will continue to do the nominating?

^^ Typically, MOC delegate the NOM process to a committee who handles the details on their behalf. Whether they win/lose the next election should have no impact on issuing NOM's.

Most MOCs who are leaving office (voluntarily or involuntarily) turn in their slates in January before departing. While it is certainly possible for the incoming MOC to pull that slate or replace it, I've never, ever heard of that happening. Not to mention that the new MOCs have better things to do upon taking office than immediately start making some of their constituents very unhappy. I was one of those nominated by an MOC who lost the election. Had no effect on my nom.

Just to clarify, as long as I am on that slate, I am considered Nominated? If I am not the principal nom, I can still recieve an appointment through the Secretary of the Navy? Is that super common?

Yes you are nominated. You can still receive an appointment if you are not the principal nom. 150+ appointees are selected each year off the National Waiting list... which consists of EVERYONE who has a nomination.
