Nominations-Which states are competitive?

Texas is brutal

Just look at the number of current cadets from there. I would bet they do great in Beast given that it is "only" 90 degrees. Maybe struggle a little in January!

I *think* Pennsylvania is #2.

I'd like second that, PA is very stiff. When I went to Robert Casey's office, there were 3 committees interviewing the applicants, and about 12 of us in the waiting room. Two were Eagle Scouts and at least five had a LOA. I was one of those people with a LOA, but neither of the senators nominated me anyway.

Hey, I also received my first nomination from Senator Kay Bailey Hutchinson. I also found out on the same date, but I guess that would make sense. I got a phone call from one of her staff during community service so it really threw me off guard.

I knew it was competitive, but Senator Hutchinson said in her letter that over 500 people applied for nominations (granted I'm sure that is spread over all 4 nomination academies).

Awesome! Where in Texas are you from? Have you received an acceptance letter yet?

Generally speaking, any state with a SA in it or with a very large military presence will be hideously competitive.

California, New York, Virginia, and Maryland are the usual names brought up when the question flies. It would make sense (as mentioned above) that Pennsylvania would also be among the top ones simply because it borders New York and Maryland and has a demographic that generally leans toward the military.

Texas, as always, is over there on it's own planet.

Just remember one thing, though: The "intensity" of the competition ebbs and flows depending on any number of factors. In my day, 1986 was a crazy year because Top Gun had come out and EVERYBODY wanted to be Tom Cruise. Pop-culture items, world events, number of candidates applying, etc., all get poured into this couldron from which the final numbers emerge.

Your best bet is to not worry about it, mainly because you have ZERO control over it. Do your best and submit the BEST package you possibly can, and then let the chips fall.

Best of luck.

I wonder if you met my son - PA/Eagle/LOA. They were an outstanding group of young adults. The decision of whom to select for nominations must have been very difficult.

I live in Richardson right outside of Dallas, where are you from?

I received my appointment two weeks ago. I'm waiting before I send in the acceptance post card, so I can keep my options open just in case. Have you received your appointment?

Cool! I'm from Houston, TX and I received my appointment last week.
I signed my card about a week after I received it though, but I'm also continuing my A&M application (applying for housing, etc.) just in case anything happens and I can't go to West Point. What other colleges are you applying too?

Well lets see, I'm applying to air force and navy. I'm in air force and waiting to hear back from navy. I also got into A&M and George Mason. I'm planning on visiting all the academies this semester.

That's really good. I started out applying to all three academies, but the navy alo was horrible and i didn't get a nomination to AFA. Have you gone to any of the SLSs?

No I didn't. I applied to them, but I was too late for the West Point SLS, and I didn't get into the Air Force SLS. But my sister goes to West Point so I got to see the campus when my family dropped her off on R-day.

Did you go to any of the SLS's?

I was rejected from West Point, but was accepted to Navy and Air Force. I was only able to go to Air Force though. It's weird that you can get rejected from the SLS but are a strong candidate when it comes to actually applying.

I know right. I didn't get in the SLS for Air Force and West Point, but yet I got an LOA to Air Force and got my appointment from west point in january. I guess its just one of those things we will just never figure out. And i really thought i was going to get in the Air Force SLS, but i guess it doesn't matter now. How was it anyway?

It was pretty good, the campus is really nice and the activities we did were pretty fun. It gave me a good insight about what academy life was gonna be like. I'm gonna actually do an overnight visit to West Point in April, when are you planning to go?

Well, I'm going to visit Annapolis and West Point in February, and I'm doing the Air Force orientation in April. I've been to West Point before, they also have a really nice campus (in fact all the academies have a nice campus). It'll be fun getting used to the cold.

Im leaving for West Point in 2 hours :D :D :D I get a tour tomorrow : ) : )

So excited, I visited USAFA last year, so we will see which I like better :thumb:

Sounds fun. Have you been accepted to Annapolis as well? Is Air Force Academy or West Point your first choice?

It will definitely be fun getting used to the cold, psyche.

I have not been accepted into Annapolis. At this point, I'm really not sure. I like the idea of going to either place. Where else did you apply?

I will definitely miss this great Texas weather. Cold weather will be most interesting.

Cold weather is awful and boring. The first snow is always fun and pretty. The whole cleanup and muddy streets things gets old fast. West Point is definetly worth dealing with the weather for. NY spring, summer, fall = AMAZING!!

I started applying to all three academies, but got a nomination only for west point. I also applied to Texas A&M, UT, Baylor, and University of Houston. If not west point, I was gonna go to Texas A&M.
Did you apply to only the academies or did you have some backups as well?

I had some backups, A&m being one of them. Although I really wanted to get out of the state (even though i'm not such a big fan of the cold). Originally I thought I was only going to be able to get a nomination for West point from Kay Bailey Hutchinson, but then it ends up that my congressman nominated me for all the academies, which was very cool.

Were you top ten percent?
