hey guys! I'm applying to USNA for class of 2015. On the topic of nominations, I was wondering if anyone knew how competitive nominations are in Maine. The fact of the matter is that I know I'll get a nomination from either my congressman, senators, or the president, but I'm more concerned about how competitive it is between Maine nominees to get that vacant spot for an appointment to the academy??? also, how competitive is it to get an appointment under presidental nominations?

First to get a nom from the President, you must be a military dependent. Second, there are unlimited noms from the president, but only 100 appts. They say typically there are approx 400-500 noms every yr in the president category, so you basically have a 20-25% chance

Good luck!

You know what they say about those who assume. Also, your question is a bit confusing. There is not one "vacant" spot for an appointment. Each of the Maine MOCs may have up to 5 mids at USNA at any one time. Additional candidates from Maine may also receive appointments that are "slotted" to another nominating source, such as SecNav. It also depends on whether each MOC makes a principal and alternate noms, ranks the nominees, or simply nominates ten (or fewer) individuals for each vacancy.

Pres noms are non-competitive, meaning that if you're qualified for one, you'll get one. Some candidates receive appointments with only a Pres nom but some do not.

You really can't control your competition. Just make your packet the best possible and see what happens.

Don't forget that NJROTC Senior Naval Science Instructors have their nominations as well.

^^^1985 Is right, just make your packet the best.

The SA's and any college for that fact want the most well rounded student possible. That means, take the most demanding courses and do well, volunteer in your community, be active in sports and school. The USNA is geared towards engineering, so make sure you have a strong math and science background and great SATs.

For every vacant spot, an MOC can nom 10 people, yet, the Academy can only appoint 1 person for that spot. I recall last yr on the boards, there was a child from Maine who had 3 noms, but did not receive an appt. That is why you need to have the best packet.

Some states the MOCs do not deconflict with ea other and it is possible to get 3 noms, 4 if you get President. Some states, such as NY state if you have a nom from 1 MOC do not expect a 2nd or 3rd. The reason is to spread the wealth. I believe VA is the same. Also in some states they ask you to rank the order of your SA choices, NC & CO does this. You can get 3 noms from NC, but 1 could be for the AFA, 1 for USNA, and 1 for USMA. or all 3 could be for 1 particular SA. SO beware, chose wisely, you might get a nom, but it could be for an SA that wasn't your 1st choice. Our friends DS got a nom for the AFA, but not the USNA(he had an LOA), which was his 1st choice. Luckily the person who got the nom to USNA, swapped with this child. Both are now at the SA's of their 1st choice

You have a long haul ahead of you, and who knows what the competition might be in 3 yrs from now. There could be less, there could be more. Look back in 01, after 9-11 many people decided that they wanted to serve, thus the competition became tougher to get in, nobody could have foreseen that. Yet, for people like you, you are already plugged in and are working towards your goal which should make you more competitive.

Finally, remember people will tell you to have a back-up plan, apply for ROTC scholarship. You have grown as a person for the last 3 yrs, you will continue to grow for the next 3, and you will definetly mature at the SA. Just be realistic to what your goal is and how to attain it.

Nobody knows your scholastic or athletic background, but I agree with everyone else don't assume anything! Do what you can to make your packet the best it can be, and leave the rest to fate!

For the senator who nominated our son, of his slate of 10, nine are at USMA enjoying their first week as new cadets. Number 10 just could not get a waiver for a health issue. Forty-one students from my state are there; hundreds more that asked for noms are not. You need to put together a great package!

thanks guys! nad about assuming I'll get a nomination, I'm not actully assuming I will in reality, though I'm trying to think on the bright side, but just for purposes of my question I was assuming that If I made it what would it be like after.....I'm actully pretty confident in myself, not overly confident, but I know that there's always going to be someone better than me, so I push harder to be the best I can possibly be! If I go to the naval academy, then it will be the fourth generation in a row attending the school, my dad, grandfather, and great grandfather went!

Just make sure that you apply because you really want to be a naval officer, not because you really want to do what your father and grandfather did.

I'm from Maine too. And you'll definitely get nominated, as long as your package is halfway decent. As in, at least a 3.3 GPA, and knowing how to sway people to your side. There aren't many applicants, and the offices coordinates their picks to nominate the most people they can. There was a girl who had 500 on each section of the SAT and had never taken honors classes, but was still double-nominated. I was triple nominated by Sens. Snowe and Collins and Rep. Allen. I had a 3.3 GPA (pretty low for applicants), and I never even played a sport!

However, I did not receive an appointment (shock! Lol). I'm reapplying for 2013, and the good news is, I automatically have a nomination from a couple of the offices, because it's their policy to renominate someone if they were rejected the first time. So, people aren't fighting tooth and nail to get a nomination.

That said, out of a slate of 10 nominees, only 2 are usually academy material. Nobody does primary nominees, so it's entirely up to USNA who makes the cut.

Thanks for the advice man! that information is exactly what I wanted to know. One more question though: so out of those nominees, how many do you think are actully competitive by USNA's standards?? is it only a few? becasue it sounds like that by the way you put it..and good luck re-applying! maybe I'll see you in the brigade in the near future!

I think out of the 10 nominated by each, only 2-3 are triple qualified by the academy. The military is becoming increasingly unpopular in high schools in Maine these days, and the administration will do anything to keep recruiters out and the anti-war propaganda heavy.

how competetive?

Greetings All,

I live in AZ and since there is so much discussion about competitive states I am curious how competitive is Arizona for USNA? Any ideas?

Thanks,

Julia

p.s. how excited I was today my DoDMERB papers came I cannot believe I am really applying to USNA.
