I recently received an acceptance and honors college invitation to the University of Maryland. Should I not be accepted into USNA, this is my plan B option. I'm extremely interested in participating in the NROTC unit there, although I will not be on scholarship. I am not extremely knowledgeable in this field, so does anyone know the following?

-Are there any limitations on non scholarship midshipmen?

-How will NROTC affect my academic schedule? (i.e. What classes are necessary for participation)

-Does anyone have experience with this unit or know anything about it? It is a relatively new and not much information is readily available.

Thank you! -Yellowjacket

Just so you know, if you are planning on applying for a NROTC scholarship at some point, the Navy heavily favors STEM/Technical degrees when awarding scholarships.

There is a limit on how many midshipman a specific unit has space for, both scholarship and college programmers. Call the battalion at the University of Maryland and let them know that you have been accepted to the school and that you would like to participate as a college programmer. Find out if there is an application process to join the unit.

You will take one Naval Sciences course each semester. So, there could be a conflict that you will have to work your academic schedule around. There is also a Naval Sciences Lab that you will sign up for. It will be very early in the morning, so schedule conflicts are highly unlikely. DS Lab is 7-9:30 Tues and Thurs, many other schools start the lab a 6. Again, something to ask UM.

Since you are a non stem major getting a scholarship will require great grades and high NROTC standing, but getting advanced standing will be easier. (Advanced Standing is contracting and you get a stipend and book money, but no tuition reimbursement). You are required to take 2 semesters of Calculus and some sciences regardless of major to commission through NROTC.

Another path to commision if Sub and the Nuclear Navy is something that interest you is NUPOC. Nuclear Propulsion Officer Candidate Program. Google search or search this forum for information on that program if subs is of interest to you.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think you're required since about half of Advanced Standings are given out to those who didn't take Calc/Physics, but it's highly recommended if you want even the slightest chance of a sideload. And College Program is still required to take two semesters of math and natural science.

Course requirements for NROTC
Naval Sciences (each semester)
Weekly Drill Instruction - Lab (each semester)
Calculus (1 year - Scholarship)
College Algebra or Advanced Trig (1 year - Advanced Standing)
Physics with Lab
(1 year - Scholarship)
Physical Sciences with Lab (1 year - Advanced Standing)
English (1 year)
World Culture/Regional Studies (1 semester)
National Security Policy/American Military History (1 semester)

Thank you all for your responses! It means a lot. I'll be sure to keep you all updated as new things come up!
