Hello guys! I was just trying to obtain more information about the scholarship opportunities for a non-technical scholarship. There is not much information on the AFROTC website about it! I want to major in biology or field geared more towards the medical/science field to work towards being a physician in the Air Force. Does anybody know anything or had anyone received a scholarship for a major such as that? What did it include, how’d you get it, etc. Thanks!

The military gets most of its healthcare provider staff officers from civilian colleges and medical or other professional school, not through service academies or college ROTC.

See:

There is also the military medical school at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Nethesda, MD. Attendees primarily come from civilian colleges.

I am not sure how AFROTC works, but I assume its graduates are expected to major in approved subjects and commission into non-healthcare specialty areas. NROTC allows a thimbleful of its top national grads to go to medical school each year, a highly competitive program. I suspect AFROTC is similar. You have to be ready and prepared to serve in one of the usual AF officer fields available out of AFROTC.

There may be opportunities to request lateral transfers into the medical community at a certain juncture in an AF career, but as always, the needs of the AF prevail.

Each year, there are threads on paths to military medicine. Try the SAF Search function or an external Search with Google, ensuring “site:www.serviceacademyforums.com” is in your search string.
