Northwest Prep Question

Can someone share the dress code at NWP? We did not see it on the web page.

Thanks!

Just to add to the above posting, the Durbecks will send a packing list as the time gets closer (around June) with more details about that business casual dress code.

...and the packing list (to include your trunk).

Hey @Gabe_ ! I attended NWP last Fall-Winter as a free agent and I really loved it. Since it was all online, I was at home during NWP and stayed at home, and attended my local community college in VA. I was thinking about attending a state university, but it simply didn't make sense financially to attend the university for a single semester. Also, if you are trying to go to a private or state university, be aware that some universities only have intro/freshman level classes in the fall and you would be entering in the spring semester. Of course, contact your local community college/university prospects to see if this applies to them and to see if they offer the classes that NWP requires (if you're a falcon) or recommends (if you're a free agent). Also, it all comes down to which academy you're trying to enter—I know navy has some different requirements. I hope this was helpful! I really hope that you are able to attend NWP in person next fall! As legend has it, it's much better in person and much easier to stay motivated by your fellow classmates. If, unfortunately, you are unable to attend in person, make sure to set up some sort of communication between the entire class. We used GroupMe and it worked amazing! Stay in constant contact with your class and help each other out. To answer your second question, I would totally do NWP again! I can't recommend it enough, even if it's online! Best of luck to you in your future endeavors!

Hi I'm a bit late to the thread, but could you explain how transferring to a college works during the second semester?

I don't think you transfer. I believe you enroll in a CC or a U. My DD is deferring acceptance to our state U, and planning to attend there in the spring. Hopefully someone with first hand knowledge will reply.

The Durbecks will give you ample time and support on applying/enrolling in a community college and/or university. Like @Gabe_ said, you cannot transfer your credits or anything, you just apply for the spring semester. Unfortunately, since NWP is not an accredited institution, your classes are non-transferable and you will be taking a similar class schedule to the one that you take at NWP. As far as colleges are concerned, your time at NWP was a gap semester since none of the classes are transferrable. If you plan on applying for an actual university, I would recommend applying before you go to NWP because your time at NWP is very valuable and you will want to spend your time studying vocab rather than applying to colleges. Personally, I'm attending a community college and the application took me about 20 minutes last fall, but I know universities are a bit trickier and take a bit more time and effort to apply to.

Unfortunately, not all U will allow deferral. Most colleges in CA are highly impacted, so they do not allow students to defer. My DS will have to either take an online class from an out-of-state college or something. This is why going to NWP is a bit challenging in terms of school logistics.

What about your local community college? I am in CA and was able to sign up just fine around November. With Community Colleges, you can register just for the spring. The AFA does not particularly care about if you go to a community college versus a four year university for the spring semester.

Where in CA are you? We are in the Bay Area. We've called the local CC and were told we can apply during our allotted window. No preferences will be given to new students. Because the schools are impacted, preferences will be given to returning students only.

I'm close to the Bay Area. That is usually true, no preferences are given to new students. I was in the last group that was able to start signing up for classes. Enrollment had been open for over a month when I was finally able to go into there and sign up for my classes. All of my classes were less than half full when I signed up, and they are all at regular day times (no crazy night classes).

So I would not worry about the classes being full, as long as you enroll when your window opens, you should get all of your classes. If you are not able to get one for some reason or another, the Mrs. Durbeck will provide a list of alternative courses that the academy will accept.

I personally attend my local community college. Living in California, it is all online. It does not matter if you attend a community college, private university, or state university, as long as you take what the Durbecks tell you to take. HOWEVER, if you are working to obtain an appointment to USNA, I believe that they want their students to have attended a 4-year school during the second semester. The course load you will have that second semester also varies slightly depending on the academy you choose.

To answer your question, yes, I would do it all over again and I highly recommend the program.
Did you attend with the FFS? Did you get an appointment?

Congrats!! Do you think those who attended NWP on their own without FFS were as likely to be successful getting an appointment?
The sponsored prep individuals at the various prep partner schools are pretty much guaranteed a seat in the next class, if they successfully complete prep and are fully qualified in other aspects. That status alone puts their chances much higher than a “self-prepper.”

For some re-applicants, prep school with a SA-focused program heavy on targeted academics is the answer. For others, going to college, taking and excelling in a hard plebe/doolie/swab-like schedule, is the best path. If there is ROTC, so much the better, because that is a step toward a commission and another source of a nom.

My DD deferred one of her civilian college admissions to start spring 2022 following the NWP semester. Takes a little pressure off in terms of having options for the spring, even if she ultimately opts from something close to home.

Did you defer after paying the deposit? Is it similar to requesting a gap year?

@RookieDad no deposit was requested. Basically creates a "gap semester". We looked at three options, two rolled DD over to spring 2022 start date and one said no. These are universities...we haven't dug in on the community college options yet.

@Cider42 Thank you for the information. Wondering whether Community college is batter option or a regular 4 year public university. Also do not know what king of stem courses are a requirement. Many universities do not offer both Chemistry and Physics in the same semester. Need to explore more based on the USAFA requirement for the Spring Semester.
