Northwestern Preparatory C/O 2020

Good question, I don't know if volunteer day is setup to accommodate an option for future cadets to stay at NWP on Wednesday night. Hence the idea to hold a SAF group get together for Falcon and self-prep future cadets and families that night, especially for people arriving on Wednesday.

Personally, even if staying Wed night at NWP is an option for the future cadetd, I'd prefer to have the additional family time before saying goodbye to DS till mid-December.
On the newsletter it does say that Future Cadets do get settled in and spend the night on volunteer day after all the work is done. However, on the "arrival" section of the newsletter it does state that on opening day there is a "quick, guided walkthrough" for parents if they wish to do so. I was planning to email Mrs. Durbeck about this on Monday, as my parents are trying to figure out how many nights to get a room for. I'll be sure to post an update to what she says.

GREAT catch! Since several on here are volunteering Wednesday, that will likely impact the SAF group get together ideas we're floating around. We're all in a bit of limbo right now, so we need to remain flexible and play things by ear. Hopefully we'll hear some news soon about whether there will be any covid related schedule changes for Sept 2/3.

A bit on an update after speaking to Mrs. Durbeck. There WILL be a tour for parents of volunteers on the 2nd. However, regarding getting hotel rooms for drop off days, she specifically said to make sure to book a place that can be refunded. She said that they are not positive of wither or not they will be allowed to open.

It sounds like they're leaning towards opening, but we still all need to be flexible. With that being said, everyone in the Instagram group chat is planning to volunteer, so maybe a possible SAF meetup on evening of the 1st, assuming everything goes to plan?

Well, that was an abrupt ending...
I guess we won’t be meeting in person until BCT.

Ugh. So my question is...and this is only an initial thought so please no judgment as I am only thinking aloud...is there an option to attend a prep school in another state or are the FS committed to NWP?

Interesting question, recommend re-reading the email. As a group, you will all do better working together through this. At least there is a plan in the works and you have an outline of what to expect. NWP is the largest FS prep school, they work closely with USAFA admissions and I'm sure the plan has been developed in coordination with USAFA. Think of this as a similar experience to what this year's Doolies are going through and realize that your experience will provide additional preparation for you to ensure you receive that BFE in mid-February next year.

And the hits just keep on coming!😢

Disappointing to say the least, but DD & I are already thinking about how to remodel her room to be more conducive to NWP on-line! I have a feeling that this group of kids will be amazing and be a great group of leaders when BCT comes around next June!

They said on the email they would call us later. Not to try and dismiss NWP, and I will still probably do the online NWP. Perhaps there would be a possibility of us being moved to another PS or possibly USAFA prep?

Please, everyone breathe. The news received is a basket of lemons, time to make some lemonade.

NWP is working through this to ensure the same level of preparedness is achieved by this year's Falcons. For the future cadets, rise to the challenge the different experience will bring, bond together remotely the same way you would have in person. Look at the acceptance rate for previous years of NWP Falcons, you know where you're going, you'll just be travelling a different route. It might be possible to try to switch, I doubt USAFA Prep is a possibility, they have a set level of capacity and are adjusting to COVID in similar ways. Realize too that their calendar shows a start date of 4 Aug. I strongly suspect similar story at the other FFS prep schools.

ALL NWP FS are experiencing the same shock right now. This was clearly a possibility. Unfortunately, it is now reality. You'll face similar challenges as leaders when the key parameters of a mission change. It happens all the time, there are things that happen we have no control over. What we can control is how we react.

Thanks Dad_2024!!! Wonderful, uplifting words!

These kids, I mean young adults, are resilient. They will find their way...as I believe they are working on already. 😊

In a previous post, I recommended re-reading today's email. Pay attention to the 2nd sentence of the 4th paragraph. You've all got this covered. I remember how a little over 3 months ago (21-Apr-2020 to be precise), there was not a TWE received on my DS portal and we officially became bubble-sitters.

Conquer this new challenge with the same level of determination that landed you here, and realize that you know where you'll be on I-day in June 2021.

I had a thought earlier today that perhaps CA gov's order might change at some point in the next few weeks (wishful thinking I'm sure). If so, maybe there will be an opportunity for these Falcon Scholars and future cadets to be together as a team at least for a short while. Alas, even it doesn't come to fruition, I will still be cheering for all of us parents and future cadets, knowing we have some of the finest young people preparing themselves to be leaders of our future Air and Space forces!

Even if we do not get to meet on the mountain during the NWPrep year, like the Durbecks said, there is the pizza restaurant in Colorado Springs the night before BCT! Personally I always love a good bacon and red onion pizza. :)

I- I've never seen something like that before. That looks like it would be better served wrapped up as a burrito rather than a pizza. Might look into that as I try to keep on a low carb diet. Also getting the cheese to melt well and not scorching the bacon might be an issue, maybe a blowtorch would be required? But no, I was thinking more of a traditional thin crust pizza with bacon bits and onions, mouth watering just thinking about it...
