Northwestern Preparatory C/O 2020

Like this...?
@Twins4us, that my friend is the best looking pizza crust I ever saw! You need to get that pic over to the bacon thread!

I- I've never seen something like that before. That looks like it would be better served wrapped up as a burrito rather than a pizza. Might look into that as I try to keep on a low carb diet. Also getting the cheese to melt well and not scorching the bacon might be an issue, maybe a blowtorch would be required? But no, I was thinking more of a traditional thin crust pizza with bacon bits and onions, mouth watering just thinking about it...
@Hopeful Mid 2024 If the bacon were cold, a minute or two under the broiler would handle that cheese and keep it from scorching...

I had a thought earlier today that perhaps CA gov's order might change at some point in the next few weeks (wishful thinking I'm sure). If so, maybe there will be an opportunity for these Falcon Scholars and future cadets to be together as a team at least for a short while. Alas, even it doesn't come to fruition, I will still be cheering for all of us parents and future cadets, knowing we have some of the finest young people preparing themselves to be leaders of our future Air and Space forces!
To piggyback on your hope and optimism, I wonder if NWP can't apply for a waiver or variance to let the school open. It is so small, and they seemed to have established that they have a plan for the kids coming in and maintaining a bubble for them. I read that this would need to be a parent and teacher supported application to make it fly (no pun intended - well kind of - lol). Just a thought that has been rattling around in my brain.

Never hurts to hope, it would be great if the State of California could see our unique situation and just let us go.

If you have any information on what we could do to make this happen, that'd be great! We're talking less than 70-80 kids total, isolated on a mountaintop, with no transportation to leave, they won't be participating in the "normal" dangerous college kid extra-curricular activities on the weekend and all steps seem to have been put in place to keep everyone safe. I sure wish they could go!

I have been trying to stay on top of CA's school situation as I live in San Diego County, one of the watch-list counties along w/San Bernardino. As of 2 days ago, youth sports were allowed to begin statewide. It brings me some hope. Unfortunately, the school waiver only applies to elementary schools right now but because of NWP's unique curriculum, a waiver may work. Has anyone spoken to the Durbeks about applying for one? It's a 'hail mary' but there are 27 days left. Here 's the link to the waiver process if anyone is interested: https://www.cdph.ca.gov/Programs/CID/DCDC/Pages/COVID-19/In-Person-Elementary-Waiver-Process.aspx

I’m starting to think that all of us have the same brain here 😂. My parents and I have been saying the exact same thing about all of this. As for the waiver process, it could work, but the Durbecks would need to get going on it soon, as flight and hotels would have to be rebooked. But I would love to be able to go down to the Mountain. No matter what happens here however, we need to remember that everything happens for a reason, and that the man upstairs always has a plan.

I am not sure how to approach this. I guess someone needs to ask if Durbecks have considered this?

I am the mom of Hopeful Mid, I sent a message to Gov. Newsome's office over the weekend (haven't heard back) expressing our concern over NWP not being allowed to open. Our children are the future of the Air Force, Navy, etc...they were specifically selected for the FS and need the rigors of the prep school(s). I highly recommend that you voice your concerns using the link above, in your comments mention the Durbecks name, and contact information, with a request that Newsome and the Durbecks speak one on one.

Maybe we parents should be the force to be reckoned with...

I recently saw a post on FB's "Reopen California Schools and Sports" page where a Navy parent successfully received a reply from the Department of Education's Military Affairs Team after emailing Betsy DeVos's office. This is probably a better avenue that Newsom but this be would be up to the Durbeks to pursue.

@Plebe to be?, The effort in this situation is to be commended, I trust the Durbecks are doing everything they can to ensure our future cadets are properly prepared for an appointment to USAFA Class of 2025. I suspect they are on overload right now making plans and preparing to deliver the same quality program deserving of NWPs reputation albeit in a new format.

Wondering if you made the Durbecks aware of your effort?

All, have faith the program NWP and the Durbecks will deliver is the path to appointment to USAFA. To our Falcon scholars (future cadets) on here, commit yourselves to excellence in the months ahead, do not be nervous or anxious about it. To quote Hebrews 11:1 here is appropriate, "Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.

NWP and the Durbecks have laid a path for you to follow, at the end of the path, up in the distance there is a door being held open for you, there's a list of all your names at the entrance waiting for you to enter. Follow the path, then enter the door.

These next few months are only a precursor to the 48 or so months that will follow. Keep focused on the path, if that means group runs in different time zones with cell phone in hand, so be it. If it means classroom work via Zoom, no problem. Room inspections, curfews, whatever it takes. You've got this!

You have already been selected by USAFA as leading candidates for C/O 2025, rest assured the only thing standing between you and your appointment is you. Have faith in your ability to meet the challenge.

I just sent a comment to Newsom via the link, and inquired with waiver@cde.ca.gov about the possibility for a waiver for this small private prep school in the middle of nowhere. We will see. Have not mentioned to Durbeck’s. Hate to bother them if there is no hope. They had a plan before on-line so if this happens to be able to turn back to in person, it seems like they could do it.

My daughter and I just saw this on San Bernardino County's website: https://wp.sbcounty.gov/cao/countywire/?p=8428. "For institutions that are in counties that have been on the state’s monitoring list for three or more consecutive days, indoor lectures are not allowed." It used to be 14 days. Also, there's been a glitch on the CA's watch-list monitoring system and it hasn't been updated in weeks.

Yep, she just shared it with us on the instagram group chat. Interesting development...
Perhaps we may be packing our bags after all?

Well, we should all remain "hopeful". The details of state guidelines were also recently posted: https://files.covid19.ca.gov/pdf/guidance-higher-education--en.pdf

"For counties on the State County Data Monitoring List...indoor lectures are prohibited. Courses offered in SPECIALIZED indoor settings (e.g., labs, studio arts), whose design imposes substantial physical distancing on participants based on the nature of work performed in the space, ARE permitted...Consider use of non-classroom space for instruction, including regular use of outdoor space...."

I am not seeing anywhere that schools remain closed, even in watch-list counties.

Hello all,

This is the response I got from the Waiver CA CDE regarding a waiver for a private school: "It would be a local decision in consultation with the Local Public Health Officer and the State Public Health Office. Only the Superintendent or Head of School is allowed to submit the waiver request to the Local Public Health Officer."

I am not too excited about distracting the Durbecks and pushing this agenda by emailing them, but I wonder if they have considered it. I understand that perhaps we let sleeping dogs lie, but I also think everyone would be better off in person.

Appreciate the effort, MuthaRunner. I am going to stay abreast of developments occurring daily in CA for the next 24 days. Just last night our state public health officer resigned amidst significant under-reporting errors (which means major over-reported positives). Our numbers are far from correct and have been since July 25. I am going to trust NWP's curriculum regardless if it is virtual or in-person although I believe the latter is ideal.

Honestly when it comes to contacting the Durbecks, I believe that they are looking into every single possibility for in person. I think their main issue is being able to use the space where NWP is located, as they do not own the camp where it is located.

I didn’t hear that the health officer resigned, that’s insane! I knew Newsom went into hiding when it got out that the numbers were inflated.

We all just need to stay flexible, and be ready for any sudden changes

This thread has been quiet for several days. We (speaking as a parent co-miserator) are just over 2 weeks out from future cadets embarking on the next step leading to appointment for USAFA c/o 2025. Everyone would prefer you all were together at NWP, but it's going to work out for the best. Keep your eyes on the prize.

Aim High!
