Just shouting out, Congrats to the Rook Class of 2014, Officially Recognized into the Corps.

I'm sure if I talk to my friend who goes there tomorrow he will be ecstatic. Well, as ecstatic as his personality allows. :shake: Congrats to 2014.

You mean we'll see a bunch of white name tags strolling casually across the Upper Parade Ground??? Oh, the agony!!!

Congrats, Class of 2014! See you in the fall!

Next thing they'll claim is that they are more higher in the food chain than an amoeba! I say, just let them think that. Ha!

They got their black nametags and the ability to us the centennial stairs, on top of everything else.

I forgot about the white name tags. I wish I could forget the night prior to our recognition!:beer1:

From Norwich

As a retired Army Master Sergeant I have been at Norwich for 14-years now. I have personally watched the university grow and become one of the best academic institutions in the Northeast. While other private colleges are struggling to make numbers Norwich has experience record enrollments for the past 4-years. Our Naval ROTC program is large with many members in the Marine Corps option. Currently, we have around two dozen MECEP (Marine Enlisted Commissioning Education Program) NCO's who attend the university and assist with training the Cadets. My suggestion is you come for a visit when able...as "fit" is the most important option. As for whether or not we can prepare you for a military career...read our latest copy of The Record for alumni:

Kernal D

Thanks for posting the link for the Norwich newsletter. I can't wait to share this with my DS who has been accepted to Norwich fall 2011 and he is interested to join the corp of cadets.

Thanks Kernal D

My son has prospered at Norwich. I think the whole campus community has done an excellent job while he has been there. He has had many opportunities for training. His courses have been challenging and rewarding. I have met many of the students and they are such fine young men and women. Norwich really is a wonderful and forward looking community.

Very nice to hear the great things about Norwich! My DS will be entering the Corp of Cadets this fall as well.

Thanks for the Great Comments!

Thank you all for the wonderful comments. Today while walking up to Jackman Hall I ran into a Second Lieutenant and did a double-take. Now I know I'm getting old. 2LT Moreau visited Norwich as a high school student, attended Leadership Challenge Weekend and Future Leader Camp, graduated and is now serving the Army. Her recognition of me and thanks is what makes my job so great! I get to see them all grow up into to really fine adults.

Percentage of traditional students?

Just a quick question concerning Norwich University. What percentage of the students at Norwich are traditional students? or students not in the Corps of Cadets?

I think percentage spread is about 80% Corps, 20% traditional. Although the number of traditional students has increased since I was a cadet, the size of the Corps has increased as well. They just built more housing for civilian students. Kernal D can provide precise numbers, but the Corps is the largest that it's ever been right now.

Also, there has been an explosive growth in the number of graduate degree students (on-line students, with a huge chunk from active-duty military). Believe it or not, the number of grad-student alums currently exceeds the number of undergraduate alums.

About 2,100 students in Norwich

of which I think about 45% to 50% is Corp of Cadets. This does not include Grad school maybe another 1,000. Sleeply little town in beautiful Vermont. 8 miles to Amtrak Station and State Capital. One hour to Burlington Airport.

Do you mean there are more grad-student alums than all of the undergrad-student alums going all the way back to 1819? If in fact that is the case it is an amazing statistic. I don't remember any grad students thirty years ago so there has been a huge surge in the graduate program.

Your info is undoubtedly more accurate than mine, NorwichDad! When I attended, it was 100% Corps, with civilians attending Norwich-owned "Vermont College" in Montpelier (about 12 miles away). Norwich eventually divested Vermont College and moved the students to the Northfield campus. All of the barracks encircling the upper-parade ground are 100% military now, last I heard.

Vermont is an awesome state. My favorite time at Norwich is the fall, when the leaves are changing colors, on a clear, cool Saturday afternoon during a football game when the howitzers are fired whenever the cadets score a touchdown (the sound echos up and down the valley). I fall in love with the place every time I visit -- it is truly my alma mater.

It's actually "living" alums. The number of living NU alums from the graduate program is actually DOUBLE the number of living NU alums from the undergraduate program. A lot of the grad students are military officers, but I don't have stats.

Norwich has definitely changed since our day, NU81. I honestly do not think I would be admitted if I were to apply today!

Just a little history...
Norwich actually used to be in Norwich, VT. It was right on the green where the Norwich elemntary school is now. It burned down, and I believe that's when they moved campuses.

Currently it is 2/3 Corps and 1/3 Civilian Students. This year we opened with just over 1400 in The Corps of Cadets and 700+ Civilian Students. We recently built a really nice dorm for the students and for the most part they have moved off the Upper Parade ground. Plans are in the works for building another dorm in the next couple of years.
