Norwich University

Could some professionals give their own ideas, thoughts, or experiences with Norwich University..

I was literally on my lunch break at school today, received an unexpected call from my Admissions Counselor, congratulating me on my Acceptance!

I am a bit excited, although the climate would be such dramatically different to a place like The Citadel...

Can someone pitch in, and give me their reviews of the school as well? I've been reading online, and they get so many mixed reviews, I don't know what to believe.

Furthermore, I checked out their Net-Price Calculator, and it showed me I qualify for nearly 47k in tuition, which makes my tuiton only like 11k a year, obviously much better compared to what a place like the Citadel has for the tuition costs..

Obviously, I'm not committed to Norwich or anything yet, I'm just cruious for peoples thoughts!

Thanks!

If you get ROTC scholarship the room/board is free. Nice.

But it is located in a rural, cold location far from anything. Far from cities, airports, etc. Burlington is an hour's drive away. Some skiing nearby, if that's your thing. Not too many co-eds either. Definitely not a party school (though there is an underground drinking culture that's existed for generations). Boston & New York are a hike.

If your primary intention is getting an officer's commission it's not a bad deal.

Not sure If you've heard, but I've enlisted in USMC just two days ago, for Active Duty, and I'm going to hold off on all these.. Thank you for your enlist though

Good luck at Parris Island (or that other place in San Diego where they pretend to be Marines). Don't give up on college. Post 9/11 GI Bill benefits are positively lavish.

USMC PI - Class of June to September 1982 - 1st Battalion - Platoon 1051

OORAH. My plan is to do Online College Courses, if I have time, and potentially take a few CLEP exams; my goal is to in 4-years earn my Associates Degree, then reapply to USNA, in I'm hopeful to get appointed, and work my way to a Commission, if that doesn't work out, then I can go via OCS.

DD and DW visited Norwich prior to DD going in another direction. DW was very happy with the campus overall and DD enjoyed it as well. Modern, in good shape and scenic. At the time DD had been accepted into VMI, the Citadel, and Norwich. After having done the math financially online, Norwich was the clear winner. Their representatives were also the most efficient and knowledgeable of the three institutions. DD made her choice after seeing Norwich in person. She was impressed by faculty, coaches, and the ROTC reps. She decided not to tour the others. DW was very pleased with the campus itself. She has been to many and Norwich made a strong positive impression on her.

Best!
Did either end up attending?

My daughter graduated from Norwich 2020 and my son is currently attending. I can put you in touch with him if you have specific questions. We’re South Carolina residents and he can tell you why he chose Norwich over Citadel.
Both my kids love Norwich. My son is an outdoors guy and Norwich has a mountain on campus with all sorts of free activities for students, like paintball, mountain biking, etc. Norwich has the land on campus for ROTC training and great mil lab equipment, including the cyber war room. All the buildings have been renovated on the inside, and my son’s barrack room on the top floor has the most gorgeous view of the Green Mountains. My son claims the cooler climate is actually advantageous to him for PT and FTXs. Winter PT also can be done inside in the field house. The school is a tight knit family. Two years ago a holiday break storm rolled in the Northeast stranding Norwich students at various airports and a legion of parents and alums mobilized ASAP to help. And nothing like a packed Norwich hockey game with the crowd going wild (Norwich hockey teams are always nationally ranked.) School cons: chow hall food not superlative, but lovely dining hall with fireplaces does help a little, lol.
The school will offer you a scholarship based on your high school gpa, then you will most likely also receive a grant to help match the tuition of other university options. (See webpage under affordability.) This grant will be sent in a separate letter. You can also add on other easy smaller scholarships, like a virtual visit award, take the lead award, STEM major award, etc (see webpage for list). My son, who is a B student, ended up with a very impressive amount of scholarships/grants.
If I can still get in contact with him, I would appreciate it!

Thank you!

Posted this and just saw you enlisted!
Good luck at Paris Island and you can always reengage on this choice for an SMC later… although I’d take the GI Bill and go to UCLA after your enlistment is up in the Corps!
Original Post below:
Norwich is a great school, go visit asap. Visit them all, if possible.
My decision a while back (way back) was easy. It was the military academies or VMI. I wanted a shared experience at a school where everyone lived the military lifestyle 24/7. A place where everyone experienced the same rigor and lived the same Spartan life. It was a tremendous benefit to me and my family, and I wouldn’t trade it for the world.
Norwich, much like The Citadel and the University of North Georgia, are great schools that house a cadet corps alongside other students. The 3 schools are all fairly similar in size, with Norwich being harder to get into. All three of these schools are classified as Regional colleges. Norwich gives exceptional financial aid and some of their programs are gaining national recognition.
Texas A&M and Virginia Tech are very large schools with a corps of cadets within the school. Both schools were founded as military schools but have chosen to grow substantially and are classified as National universities. Both those schools, along with the others are all great choices. My top 3 would be:
1. VMI
2. Norwich/The Citadel
3. Texas A&M
Enjoy the journey and good luck wherever you go!

Would anyone be able to advise on a good place my dad can stay during my visit to Norwich... I'm attending the Accepted Student Day on April 1 - 2.

I also just received the official TWE from USNA, hence I assume I will be continuing the Norwich pathway.. I still plant o reapply to USNA for 2 more years/

I stayed at the Best Western Plus in Stowe and it was clean and the staff was friendly. If I remember correctly , there really aren’t any hotels that were close to Norwich , they were all about 15-20 miles away. Good luck to you !

Google is a great resource! https://alumni.norwich.edu/areaaccommodations

Of course, first-hand recommendations are always nice to have. When we went up there in the fall we stayed in Killington because it was on our way from NY. It was a lovely inn, but about an hour away. I'd say depending on how much time your dad has on his own he might enjoy staying in Burlington. It's about an hour northwest of Norwich I think, but it's a very cool town with food and shops to explore right on Lake Champlain. If he just needs a bed to sleep in he might as well stay close to Norwich.

Are Sarducci’s restaurant and The Skinny Pancake still in Montpelier? Those places were amazing.

I thought you went enlisted USMC? Try college first, you can always enlist if college isn't for you.
Enlisting is for kids who have no options coming out of HS or just don't want to continue studying after HS and want to do something else.
College is just not the same experience for a 23 year old with a CIB even at a SMC.

Comfort Inn is the nearest and best place to stay (in Berlin VT which is just outside of Montpellier). Favorite place to eat in Northfield is Cornerstone Burger. (be sure to go down the street to check out the Northfield Falls covered bridge). Ben and Jerry’s factory is a few exits down at the Waterbury exit, which is always fun. If for some reason the Comfort Inn is full, check out Airbnb. Lots of really nice reasonably priced places in the area.

If flying into Burlington the Skinny Pancake at the airport and near Lake Champlain in Burlington are still open. One of my favorite sandwich shops (breakfast and lunch) is on Main St in Stowe - Green Goddess Cafe.

I was in DEP, but never signed the final contract - hence I pulled away, without any reprecussions.
