I've been accepted to Norwich and VMI. Which one should I pick? I've done a lot of reading but I still can't figure it out.

Consider: location, price, ROTC detachments, majors and minors available, the type of weather you'd like to be experiencing etc.. Make a list of what you prefer and then decide :) good luck!!

Both are great schools, congrats

Visit each and stay overnight on campus if possible. Talk to the students there. Check with admissions on visits. Good luck.

Visiting is the only way you will get a true feel for each. If you want a total military environment vs civilian students and corps combined could also be a big factor for you. They are both great, but they are different. Do you love cold weather? I can make my suggestion. Also consider family access to you. I know many HS kids don't think about that but if VT is too far to get you home for Thanksgiving and Va is easier on the family, all those things play a part in the decision process.
First and foremost consider your major and the quality of education. At least from what I saw with both engineering depts, I thought they tied, but that may not be the case for your major or your opinion. Taking the time to visit is vital. As a Mom who knows her boy pretty well, I would not influence his choice because it was HIS decision to make. It is his life and his preference, No one on here can or should do that for you. There are many that have attended either school and they are very happy to answer specific questions about each one, but to decide between the 2...Naaa :shake:Good luck:thumb:

Direct from Norwich

The advice you have received is solid. You should really visit. Each is unique and each has its own traditions. Military training in many aspects will be similar...I believe VMI has all branches of ROTC, as does Norwich. Location is a factor in that...if you don't like to ski, snowboard or enjoy the snow you may not appreciate the Green Mountains of Vermont. If you like those things then you might want to join our Mountain Cold Weather Rescue unit, which actually goes out and assits with finding lost hikers and skiers, and affects rescues of the same.

Going with what was said above, if you want any info on any of the Special Units here I can get you an answer from any of them, I have Rook Buddies who, 3 just made the MCW Rescue Team, 6 (including me) in Band, 3 in Cav, 2 in Drill Team with 1 on Shock Platoon, none in Arty but I know one of them well, my Lab Partner is on the Army Ranger Challenge team. One of the guys in my Naval Science Class just got indoc into Semper Fi Society. There are a ton of other clubs and some ROTC Units that I'm sure I know someone in. But yes I would suggest the Green Mountains if you like the cold or have an interest in some sort of winter sport, especially Hockey, This year's final game vs. Babson was one of the most exciting games I have ever seen. Ultimately the decision is yours, and you really can't go wrong with either, just where you think you would be happier. If you have any Norwich questions I would be happy to answer them from a Cadet's perspective.

I guess I can try to help you, from an outsiders perspective. I've visited both VMI and Norwich and talked with people affiliated with both schools.

VMI is in a small town in a very hot region of the country. Norwich is in a small town in a very cold part of the country. I happen to prefer the cold as I live in Northern New England, but I got used to the heat and to seeing so much green in Lexington very quickly. The South is not New England. They are very different regions with very different atmospheres.

VMI feels different than Norwich.I think the main change between Norwich and VMI is that Norwich has civilians. Even though you have Rook year and live in a Corps 24/7 in a similar way to the lifestyle of VMI, you still have normal college kids at Norwich. This is not a bad thing - it just makes the two schools different.

I think that I liked VMI better than Norwich because of the academic piece. VMI has one of the top ranked Arabic programs in the country, a field of study that I hope to pursue. Norwich doesn't offer Arabic. I also felt that the academics were of a higher quality at VMI, but that was my opinion. Academics can be what you make of them.

To me, the major differences were location (cold, hilly vs. hot, hilly) and the civilians.
