DS eyesight was diagnosed with not correctible to 20/20 because of eyes strained at the time. He was subsequently told to go to another dr and was told that he was definitely correctible to 20/20. How should we go about on informing DODMERB of the the second finding?

Never know if my son gets the whole story, but one of the members in his AF Rotc detachment lost his pilot spot when he took his flight physical. His vision was only correctable to 20/22 and because he couldnt get 20/20, he lost his pilot spot. Is it true, I have no idea.

USNA19DAD, have you heard anymore on this? My son was just today given Not Qual to USNA because vision not correctable to 20\20 in each eye. Oddly, he was deemed qualified to USAFA. My son does not wear glasses, so this was a surprise to us. But DODMERB didn't ask him to go to another doctor, so they are going off the 5 min eval by the small office they send us to for DODMERB exam. Do we need to wait and see if USNA requests more info, or can we get an exam showing he is correctable to 20/20 and send that directly to DODMERB? He's my 4th one applying to USNA, but all the others were Qualified, so this is our first time going through this.

We took him to another optometrist and he was able to bring him to 20/20, we then email the examination record to DODMERB. We are still waiting to hear back.

Thanks! I just got the same info on what to do from DODMERB yesterday. Mine goes in tomorrow to a different doctor for a new exam. Hoping for the best. Good luck to your son!

FYI. While vision not correctable to 20/20 is a more serious issue, even vision corrected to 20/20 has implications with admissibility. USNA once clearly stated this in admissions material. It is now buried in DodMerb fine print:

Did they designate a particular dr. or any dr. of your choice? We just went to a local dr. Thanks.

They did not designate. They said we could use any optometrist or ophthalmologist. They also said it could be any exam within the last 12 mos, as long as it was a manifest refraction vision exam. But my son doesn't even wear glasses, usually passes his eye exams, so he doesn't have any exams in last 12 months. My son just told me the guy at DODMERB exam went really fast and sometimes he just picked one because he really couldn't tell which was better since the guy went so fast.

God I always hated it when I would get my eyes checked and they would say which one was better and sometimes I honestly couldn't tell the difference. The secret I found out is that sometimes they are the same. They do it because they dont want to rely on just one pass through of the lenses and want to make sure they get it right

UPDATE: DoDMERB medical status for DS for USNA has been updated to QUALIFIED! One less hurdle to overcome! PTL!

Going through the same issue with DS. Never even needed glasses. I wouldn't think his eyes have deteriorated to that level in two years. Passed with 20/20 in August 2015 at a DODMERB exam. Needed new DODMERB exam this year because the exam was 2-years and 1-week old (NROTC sideload). Dr. apparently rushed DS as well and indicated that vision was not correctable to 20/20. He has set up an appointment at my optometrist, who is familiar with the DODMERB process (has two USCGA grads). But knowing others have had similar issues get resolved is comforting. Thanks for posting.
