Well I guess that’s it my DS received not qualified email today crazy part they told him it was due to leadership and extra curriculum activities how many more does he need he been on varsity for football baseball and track for 4 years …..No lie I knew it was gonna be touch still getting in when they canceled DEI PROGRAMS

Sorry for the bad news. Extra curriculars and leadership are not all about varsity sports. Student government and community volunteering are also important. My DS played one sport, but also did student government and community service. If he's really interested in attending, have him take Calc and Physics at a local college or university over the next year, add it some community service or other sort of volunteering and reapply next year. There are LOTS of mids at KP who didn't get accepted the first go around. Perseverance pays off and the academy tends to reward it, too.

Im sorry for your bad news. How were his academics and test scores?

Sorry for the disappointment. There is good advice above about adding leadership activities taking classes and reapplying. How were grades and test scores? Do you have a plan B? perseverance looks good for a reapplicant. It’s not all about varsity sports.

Academics was strong 3.4 and he took all honors classes I think ACT got him he made a 20 I all ready With his MOC he said when he takes the test on the 19tg if his score goes up he will personally make some phone calls hopefully that helps no Plan B we was banking on it might just go str8 to captain school

* SAT or ACT qualifying scores for admission will be determined by the Academy for each entering class.

Above from the USMMA website. A 20 ACT score probably didn't make the cut is my guess. Curious who "they" are who said extra curriculars were the issue and how 'they' said it? Many paths lead to victory so it's on you what you do next.

3.4 GPA and 20 ACT are not "good academics". and what is "captain school"?

Sorry to hear but as others have said, keep plugging and make sure you apply to all representatives in Congress. Both Senators and Congressperson.

By the way, and going back to your post of 01/31 when you got a phone call from an appointing authority. Do you recall or do you have paperwork indicating what the topic of conversation was? The reason I ask is there is a difference between a nomination and an appointment. Quoting from a congressional website, “A nomination is the authority from a nominating source for a candidate to be considered for entrance by an academy. An appointment is the actual slot for admission from the candidate’s preferred academy.”

This shows me that high schools aren't the same by far, hence the national school ratings. In our public high school someone with a 3.4GPA and a bunch of AP classes would be expected to have at least a 1350 SAT, which translates to about 29 ACT. Absolutely no offense meant for you and your boy. Schools prepare their students differently, I guess.

I am not the KP expert but something tells me that the ranking process is very similar to the other academies where academics is weigthed signifigantly higher than the others. As others have said, GPAs vary widely but standardized test level the playing field. A 20 ACT is cleary disqualifying and I would question if my son has the academic foundation to be successful at most colleges much less handle the rigor of a service academy. You also have to remember that this is a contest for limited offers. I am not sure what the DEI comment is looking to answer but it would be a travesty if your son was appointed with an application that is disqualifying based on his skin color over other candidates that are considerable more qualified.

This is spot on re: being prepared for the rigors of KP academics. I can honestly say that if my child had a 20 ACT score, we’d explain - “Solid effort but you aren’t ready. Let’s self-prep!”. My son had the minimum SAT score and his future coach asked for more. It’s a competitive process. Thankfully DS crushed it on his 2nd try but going in w/ the minimum score is risky (IMO). The first year academic rigor is no joke and takes many plebes down by 2nd Tri. Even with a much higher than minimum SAT score, it’s been a grind for our son. There is a lot being done to try and fix some of this but it won’t be fixed overnight. I wonder if it will even be fixed by the time our kid gets out. But….we are hopeful that there is a renewed sense of importance being placed on KP and that better days are ahead.

To the OP - if I were in your shoes we’d consider a year of self-prep or even a year at the community college to get ready. Your child sounds like a great kid & is unique in wanting this for a vocation. Don’t give up on this dream! KP is probably the hardest SA to get through (Academics + a year at sea) but is an amazing place to be from. We see that already. So many options after graduation. I know our kid will have trouble deciding what he will do.

A 20 ACT is never gonna make it. gotta work that to at least a 28, I would think. And, honors isn't gonna cut it either. Need to load up on AP. Wake up!

My son is a plebe right now, he had a 21 going in. Was in running start his last 2 years of high school. He had a rough start at first, but is now in the top half of the 2028 class. 3.0-3.5 gpa right now. There were a lot plebes that came in with much better ACT scores than my son that are no longer there anymore. So some kids get there and just excel under the pressure because they know where they are and what they have to lose.
