Hi. For Class of 2022 applicants who were not selected for Summer Seminar, when should they hear from USNA regarding the status of their preliminary application? The 2022 application is open on the admissions website, but it says not to submit a preliminary app if a SS application was filled out.

Also, for those of us with a DS/DD who did not get in, what are they doing this summer? My DS is going to study abroad. He is disappointed with not getting into SS but hoping that studying/living in a different country will be a meaningful summer experience.

Thanks.

Yes, I feel going aboard to expand learning on a foreign language & culture will be very helpful during his SA & congressional interviews:) It doesn't hurt to study SAT/ACT to achieve higher score or study for SAT subject tests.

Last year, our status on the preliminary application was sent out May 6, 2016. Considering May 6 was yesterday, I would presume that they would be hearing relatively soon.

DS isn't going to SS, but he applied to GenCyber camps across the country, too. He has a concurrent enrollment college class, a 120 day SAT prep self paced program, summer weed abatement work and his Eagle Scout project. He also runs 3 miles every morning (plus CFA prep), and is taking Krav Maga classes 2 nights a week.

Summer isn't any less busy. Lol

Wouldn't sweat it too much about not getting into SS. DD had applied last year and didn't get in which she interpreted as not being competitive and started thinking of not following up on the application. Her BGO called and encouraged her to continue with the application saying that a good percentage of successful applicants didn't get into SS either. Although a bit skeptical, she continued and got her LOA in November and will be joining the class of 2021. BGO was absolutely right.

Use your summer to challenge yourself and grow as a person. Go outside your comfort zone and do something because it is hard, challenging, interesting and/or rewarding to you. Take smart risks and don't always do the "safe" thing and definitely don't do it because it "looks impressive" or because it would be something that admissions looks for.

Same here with DS. He was really disappointed and thought SS rejection meant he wouldn't get in. He continued anyway and received an LOA early December. Now class of 2021, 52 days away!

My DS didn't get in either, but he will be busy this summer continuing to work on improving himself as a well rounded candidate. He will continue studying to re-take his SAT and ACT (trying to continue improving his score). Working on Leadership activities by attending Boys State in June, football camp in June, and will be attending the Semper Fidelis All American Program and Battles Won Academy in Washington, D.C. in July. He was disappointed to not get in to the SS, but it doesn't change his long term goals, just one bump in the road, and he will continue pushing forward :)

Hope you're not reading too much into not getting accepted to SS? My class of 2018 son didn't either, but he did receive his appointment
the following November.

Summer is a busy time no doubt- what is the name of the SAT program? We are looking for our son. Thank you.

We found 3 that are either free or low cost. Since DS is a scout, there's a $1,000 program available for $50. Princeton Review is free from a recommendation by his guidanxe counselor, and Khan academy is totally free for all.

Excellent question! I was wondering the same thing- the regular application is open, so should DS start a new application? He applied to NASS but didn't get invited....?
This summer he's doing the following (this will probably identify him if anyone knows him, but that's ok, right?): taking the SAT June 3, then he's STAFF at AFJROTC CLC, then driving to Boys State the same day CLC ends, then two Civil Air Patrol experiences, Flight Academy and SUPT-FC (Undergraduate Pilot Training)...and we'll try to squeeze in a wrestling camp and a family vacation.
This is all moving kind of fast for this mama!

Sounds like a busy summer! He's doing some great things!

This is a great idea. I think SAT is what probably knocked my DS out of the running for SS.

DD got LOA and did not get invite to SS or CVW. BGO got her into CVW after we requested he check it out. Coldest February they had in Annapolis in many years. Many qualified applicants get invited to neither but they still get in. Don't worry and good luck.

As for the first question - whether or not to start a pre application for class of 2022 - it says in big red letters that if you already applied for SS, NOT to submit another application. Seems like the email DS got said to stay tuned for more information coming in June? Can anyone confirm that he should get some indication whether he is a candidate or not in June? Thanks!

If he applied for SS he has an application started.

My DS applied to NASS but wasn't accepted. If I recall correctly, he received an email toward the end of May saying that he was an official candidate for USNA and providing log-in info for the candidate portal.
