Not so positive for USNA. Current mids, can you weigh in?

Lejuene is hard to get access to because it is used... a lot. Early morning is swim practice, during the day it’s PE classes, after class is swim team, after that usually there are club teams who rent it. Sure it can be used some, but it’s usually when Mids are busy with other things.

Wow. This is quite shocking. Would the deterioration of USNA's buildings threaten the future of the academy?

MacDonough Hall is a piece of $@@@. The Dungeon pool is worse than the Cuyahoga River when it caught on fire in the 70's! 7th Wing gym is worse than Buff has stated. USNA needs to get its act together. Ricketts Hall should be open to all. IMHO

@ThePatternisFull

I can see that your DD/DS was accepted to all 3 service academies. Put yourself in your DD/DS shoes. Knowing what you know about the facilities at USNA, would you have still gone to USNA?

The question assumes that the other Service Academies aren't in similar circumstances. They all have the same budgeting process, West Point has similar, historical buildings, and USAFA is gettig to that age where updates are nececssary (if they haven't been done yet). There is a factor of budgeting priorities, and USAF has reputation for putting high priority on facilities

That's not gonna happen. My recollection is that Rickett's is the football training facility ?(I must have forgot my yard gouge, and in my day is was kind of a dumpy old out of the way building). If that's the case, it's almost certainly built with USNAAA funds. I do agree that the entire Brigade should have access to the same quality of physical training facilities as the football team, and if I were the Supe , would "encourage" USNAAA to provide the funding to do so. (That could be a whole 'nother thread -- what I would do if I were the Supe !:):):))

RE: Ricketts Hall - yes, it's the football team's domain. Your memory does not fail you.

@NavyHoops knows Lt. Gen Reynolds, maybe she can bend her ear when she becomes Supe. :)

When I was a Plebe. . .
Ricketts Hall was the Enlisted barracks for the folks who worked in King Hall, Bancroft Medical, etc.

You are really reaching here. I'm a grad with recent knowledge of how things are at USNA and I'm also a faculty member at a University and after reading the articles over and over again, there is NOTHING that would be a reason not to go there. If you're looking this hard for a reason to not go there, maybe you need to look at what is really your Plan A.

MacDonough Hall had “character” 35 years ago! I always found it either ominous or intimidating when I stepped into the boxing ring with all that dried blood on the mat. And after that hour in MacDonough, I usually showed up in my next period Celestial Navigation class with bloody white works and a Kleenex shoved up my nose..

The real question - how did your opponent show up to his next class?

As for this hurting the academy ... there are thousands of qualified candidates willing to take the spot if someone doesn’t like it.

I fixed that for you...

Good question...I think we were both stunned and bloodied..the first round was generally acceptable boxing technique....the next few were like a street brawl or if I want to flatter myself, we were pioneers on the cutting edge of MMA..:)

I believe Coach Cantello was my boxing coach and he used to yell...”Box...Don’t just punch...box!”...

The choice was made not by the facilities but by the service after Commissioning. The conversation is about the how the facilities are lacking for a prestigious university.

i can tell you that my DS was at NASS last summer and none of this bothered him in the least. many old schools are in a similar state. as long as there isn't any immediate danger of ceilings caving in while you sleep or breathing mold, I think its not important. im shocked at some of the money that civilian schools put towards their buildings and amenities, eg dorms that look like vacation spots. its not important to DS as he could care less as long as he has 4 walls and a desk

That article mentions "...a stormwater system dumping unfiltered rainwater into the Severn River..." like it's a bad thing.
That is the very definition of a stormwater system. Where do they think stormwater ought to go? It's either going to sheet drain or be piped, but yeah, it is going to end up in the Severn River if...you know*...it's near the river.

They used to dump stormwater into sanitary sewers, but all that did was overload the sanitary sewers and pollute the stormwater. Combined sewers aren't allowed anywhere in new construction anymore, for that very reason.

Plebe Boxing flashbacks....you forgot to mention how wonderful it was to pull on that "well seasoned" headgear and boxing gloves, still wet from the sweat of the class before. The smell of sweaty leather lasted the rest of the day. I also remember guys trying to make deals....ie. let's take it easy and make it look good.....those deals never survived the initial contact, and as noted above, often turned into all out brawls.

Reminds me of the old full page ad about the evils of "dihydogen oxide"....* how it was used to make styrofoam... it was showing up in our rain and getting into our soil and plants. It's even used to extinguish fires! "Dihydrogen Oxide"=H2O
