Hello,

I realize that no one can actually know the answer to this but I'd like to hear other's thoughts.

I am a college program MIDN at USD. I failed to pick up the national scholarship so next step is to apply for the 3 year sideload. I have read into the average stats for sideload awardees. Average GPA is 3.48 and I'm not sure on the average PT score.

My numbers are as follows:
GPA: 2.9-3.0 for the year (poor first semester, much better this semester)
Calc 1: C
Calc 2: B
Physics 1: A
Physics 2: taking next year
PT score: 285
A's in both Naval Sscience 101 & 102
Mechanical Engineering Major
I am ranked #1 out of the remaining college programmers in my unit and middle of the pack for my whole class (31 total MIDN)
Also I believe I will get good recs from my OI, CO, and a few other officers I have spoken with in past years

I realize that my GPA and Calc 1 grade are my shortcomings. And I also realize that no one really knows how I measure up to the competiontion as it changes every year. But I was wondering if anyone could weigh in on my chances to pick up the 3 year side load? My OI said I have a solid chance but after reading some statistics on the forums I am not so sure that's the case. Any insight or instances of others picking up the sideload with similar numbers to me would be greatly appreciated!

I wouldn't dare chance you since I'm unaware of the competition you're up against. I do think you are, perhaps, selling yourself short. You're a Tier 1 major who appears to be at least a solid B student after a rocky start, like many freshman have. I think they may write that freshman year off to typical transition jitters. I agree with the OI (whatever the hell an OI is ) that you have a solid chance. Further, if you miss it this time, there will be other chances in the future. If you continue to improve academically,as you say you are, I'm confident you'll land a scholarship at some point. Nice PT score by the way.

Thank you very much for your time and input. OI = officer instructor. Not sure if all units abbreviate it like that. But my Lieutenant was the one who told me that, just wasn't completely sure based on the forums.

I'm sure that's fine... just wasn't familiar with it. Never heard my DS use it. After my post I figured it must be Officer Instructor.

Your ranking among all of your Navy option peers is what will matter, not your ranking compared to just your CP peers. Your aptitude score and recommendation from the CO will be very significant. Having completed a semester of physics (and earning an A) will be a bright spot and unusual for the typical 3-year applicant. As mentioned previously, though, your GPA is going to be a significant hindrance. About 90 3-year scholarship are expected to be available this summer; last summer, about 300 people applied for them.

If they are then I'm sure they pick who they want to give recommendations, however I do not recall DS getting together recommendations for his sideload application. Thar was several years ago though so things may have changed.

Such as a math or English teacher from the past year?
