NROTC Alternate Chances and Timeline

What are the odds for alternates? Why would they even make you an alternate for this program if they didn't intend on eventually granting you the scholarship? Just curious.
Also are the odds better or worse for tier 3 alternates?
I don't know if anyone really has concrete numbers of odds for alternates. Its just too fluid of a process.

The alternates are for filling in the last spots at the end of the process. It appears to me that the last thing NROTC wants is to award a scholarship and then later say "Oops. sorry we made a mistake. You didn't get a scholarship". So the alternate list provides a avenue to fill in the last spots the Navy knows it can award.

NROTC is limited to about 15% of the total scholarships can be awarded to tier 3. They are right at that percentage now. Tier 3 has worse odds in the whole process. That's not saying impossible, but definitely more of a uphill battle.

I’ll say this. To the 150 or so candidates who will end up moving from the alternate list to national scholarship winners in the weeks ahead. There is no distinction when you commission that says you were an alternate. In fact some of the best on paper candidates simply do not make it to serve. Like the old joke. What do you call the person who graduates last from med school? “Doctor!”
There are candidates who have already been advised they are not receiving the NROTC National scholarship. For those still in the running, you still have hope and presented well enough to still be in consideration.

Good luck to all of you and your young adult children. And remember you can still join and compete as a college programmer if you are not awarded a scholarship out of HS.

My DS last year was a Navy "Nurse Option" Alternate #2 on the list.
Boarded the first week of January 2022 and selected for Nurse Option Scholarship on April 6, 2022.

Do they place Alternates differently? What's does it mean to be a Alternate#2 and was this made know to DS?

It looks like our son's number one school (Embry-Riddle) doesn't accept college programmers until they're Sophomores. Do you know if this is typical? He's an alternate now and if he's not awarded the scholarship he plans to apply as a college programmer, but even that looks competitive - and seems he'll have to wait out his Freshman year.

I'm not sure where the info on not accepting college programmers came from - was that published/ confirmed directly? I'm not sure if they mean as a permanent standard they won't accept college programmers until they are sophomores, or just mean that for the class of 2027 they won't be taking in college programmers in year 1? Have they stated they will definitely take in programmers in year 2? Please advise.

If NROTC doesn't accept programmers next August, has your son considered joining one AFROTC or AROTC, both of which are offered at this school and accept college programmers? If he can research the mission of each of those branches he may find a home. If he's interested to serve, I'm not sure about waiting out the freshman year vs getting into a routine, getting experience and maybe finding a home. Of course, you do you- just sharing thoughts.

This is not typical to flat out not accept college programmers, but ERAU NROTC is a popular choice among national scholarship winners and programmers, and the unit grew very large and they are taking steps to contain their size, which is a good thing imo. Others have stated part of that popularity is their track record of securing pilot slots during service selection. If you are an aviation enthusiast who likes the beach ERAU DB can be appealing. But it's not for everyone (and that's ok).

I would recommend reaching out directly to the unit to confirm options to join this unit - it was noted they along with the San Diego consortium are "full" for next year's class for scholarship recipients pending any changes in people changing plans. You can reach them at DBNROTC@ERAU.EDU. Additionally, here are two contacts from unit leadership as well.

Thank you for your thoughtful response. After waiting on the alternate list for a few months, he just received his NROTC acceptance letter today! We're over the moon. Now to request to be placed on ERAU's waiting list. And yes, he's hoping for a pilot slot during service selection :).

Well looks like I am still on alternate status, but I am not sure. Submitted everything in late September and am pretty sure it got processed in October. My portal has said: "No Decision has been made on your application" since.

A few weeks ago I emailed the scholarship team just to confirm that nothing had been decided on my app and they emailed back that I was currently an alternate. The portal does not say this and I received no email about it so I have no idea how long I have been an alternate.

Hearing that this board's results just came out makes me wonder if I have been given a final decision.

If anyone is familiar with this scenario or can offer any insight it would be greatly appreciated.

I would look here

My son was emailed that he was an alternate back in early January. I've been following the forums and was tracking that alternates should hear something within the next couple of weeks or so; however, when he logged into his net focus account it took him to message to start a new application for next year. I think applications opened for next year on 1 April so it appears the system was reset, but was wondering what happened to his current application. Does this mean he was not selected as an alternate? We've not received any communication since the email stating he was an alternate.

I posted in the other new thread that all accounts were reset but that does not mean people don't have a chance. It's just the system only retains those that were offered a scholarship. The applications weren't lost but are saved in a different system.

If an alternate ends up getting selected, would there be a way for them to access their original application, even if it has already been reset?

There should be a way. If not, the selection email will provide instructions and a different email to reply or ask questions.

It probably means that there won't be any inhouse scholarships until at least a sophomore. Anyone can join a program as a college programmer. They are limited to the number of scholarship students they can take as incoming freshman.

So will alternates simply find out about their situation by the end of the month or will it take longer? Just curious.

In seeing past comments on different threads, most of the alternates that are selected will be in the next month or so. Some could be as late as end of May or beginning of June, but likely just a few. NROTC only awards a spot when the know for sure one is available.

We got the "Nurse Option" Alternate #2 from a member of this forum. We were not notified officially. PM me for details.
