Good afternoon. I was hoping I would get some advice. I received an LOA to USNA at CVW in November contingent upon receiving a nomination and my medical cleared. Mr. Mullen has been working on getting that end processed. I had my interview with both Senators at the beginning of november, before receiving the LOA. Under the advice I read here, I contacted my Senators' offices and made them aware of my newly received LOA. Today, I was awarded with an NROTC MO scholarship. This Saturday I will be having the last of the interviews with my Congressman. I will be mentioning the LOA, however, I do no know if it also good advice to mention the scholarship. I do not know if that would hinder the receipt of a nomination since I have Plan C already in place . (My plan A is USNA, and plan B USAFA). Any advice or thoughts are most appreciated. TIA!

At my MOC interview, the panel asked for my college plans(A-Z) and the reasons behind them. They were happy to hear that my ultimate goal was commissioning, not simply obtaining an academy class ring and a free education. Both my BGO and the panel were supportive of the fact that I was pursuing an ROTC scholarship, and they commented on how it was another excellent source of commission or a great option for a year of college while reapplying to an academy if I chose to do so.
From what I have learned, working to obtain a path to commission should be the goal, and pursuing multiple options in that respect is not looked down upon. Despite the academy rivalries, every officer, interviewer, and panel I have met with has commented on the excellence of every option. In the end, you are a young adult ready to give your career and schooling to your country, and the address from which you take the Oath of Office won't change that.

If it comes up, I would mention it along with what you told us here - it's your third choice. I don't think you have to volunteer it unless the topic of ROTC comes up.

Mention the scholarship. Between that and your LOA your MOC knows you're the real deal and will want you to think of (and vote for) him whatever commissioning source you ultimately end up using.

Congrats on the MO scholarship! Tough to do especially on the first board. I found out today my kid got the MO scholarship. He will not even apply to USNA even though his best friend is there and is using all kinds of propaganda to get him to go there. He recently talked about a live vid with his Navy buddy having fun. I asked him basically "see, your buddy's having fun at USNA". His response was: "It's not the good kind of fun. It's the sad kind of fun. The fun you have when you can't have real fun."

Congratulations to your son! And thanks for the advice. I always had USNA as my top choice but having this sholarship is really making me think things through. Thank you again!

Hey, Navy is an awesome school...make good choices...the best choice for you. I can put you into contact with a current Navy plebe (subject of my above) who wants to be a SEAL but might be considering Marines.

Way back when I was in this same position and got a USNA appointment and when I told my father that I had to really think about which to choose, he almost took my head off.

PS: After a very long time during which I served and was friends with people from each of the NROTC schools that I had been accepted to, I remain very glad at the choice that I made.

PPS: My son was faced with the same choice and seemingly didn't think twice before accepting USNA.

When I had my interview with my BGO he was a ROTC grad and explained that his cousin was at the academy and told him it was not the place for him since he wanted the freedom and the ability to get the partying out of his system before being commissioned. He was happy with that decision and is a MAJ in the Marines

Congrats @Crewcap05 DS received NROTC in the first round and was relieved that he had a backup plan. During each of the MOC interviews, he was asked what his plan B was. He was able to tell them about his scholarship and his acceptance at the school of his choice (Norwich). In each instance, the panelists commented on his willingness to serve and his time management in having completed multiple applications and navigating the process.

The position you are in is excellent. Your scholarship shows you were focused and driven, and able to complete difficult applications, and complete interviews, and physical tests. No small feat.

For DS, USNA won out and remained his #1. His first 2 years were nothing like his friends who attended state universities in terms of 'fun'. But, he has a different kind of fun, bonds that will last a lifetime, and trips and experiences that have been incredible. As a 2/C he is having a lot more 'fun' now, and he wouldn't trade it.

At the end of the day, which path you take won't matter once you are serving. There are several paths to commissioning and all produce quality officers.

Thank you for your encouragement and your son's experiences. Usna remains my number one but it certainly feels different having this scholarship and heading to my MOC interview. Thank you again

Question for you is it just me or does it feel like ppl who apply to USMA only apply there a ppl who apply to USNA also apply to USAFA?

.
Be upfront about your current situation … then tell them what you want … it’s not hard

Most of all, don’t go in there and then start kicking tires … then you’re just wasting their time and your time

With our daughter, she made it very clear to them … the choice was 2 SAs or off to UVA on a music scholarship … it is what it is …
.

My son dropped his NROTC scholarship (and was already a college programmer in a unit) the day he pushed "Accept" to the USNA. It was about a 30 second decision ......

Probably only you. Some apply to 1, some to 2, some to 3, and some to 4 or 5. I suspect the trend is not so obvious as you think. Where that pairing is most likely is probably for an individual who is hoping to fly fixed wing aircraft. For someone thinking about careers doing what some of Army Combat Arms Branches do, the USNA might be a more likely alternate choice. These are just a couple of examples. Bottom line, it is unlikely that USMAs applicant pool is so different than Navy’s or Air Force’s in terms of having applicants to other SAs.

Yeah, I figured that it would mostly be people who wanna fly that apply only to USNA and USAFA but I also realize some people have a preference but with me I just only found USAFA and USNA interesting and also that a career with USN or USAF would be more up my alley. Also about the plane thing I bet you can understand my preference once your read the username but I also think being a SWO would be cool. Really anything on a Aircraft Carrier!
