I am in the process of filling out an application for NROTC, and I have a few questions. I just learned about rotc in July, but I have researched it alot and talked to a navy recruiter about it, and I really think its what I want to do. I am really nervous about the application though, especially the essay (Discuss your reasons for wanting to become a Naval Officer), because I dont know everything about being a Naval Officer, and I cant seem to come up with exactly why I want to. The main reasons are because of all the opportunities it has to offer... the advanced career paths, leadership, and serving our country. Do these make sense at all, because all Im goin by is what I read in brochures and on websites. Also on the application instructions it said for the essay to be between 300-500 words, but it has room for 2500. Is a longer essay better or would a few paragraphs be okay?

I have been working on it for a few weeks now, and have been saving it. The first night I saved it the recruiter called my cell phone and asked if I had any questions... That was really surprising, I was afraid I had accidentally sent it! But he told me to have it in by August 20th, and I have everything filled out besides my college choices (and essays!). With the college choices, is there any way to change them later? Because I have visited 2 of the 5 and Im not positive where I want to go yet.

Ok last question! Do you have to send in your transcript and letters from teachers, or do you do that later?

Thanks alot!!

The 2500 is for characters not word count.
I gave my transcript to my OIC for my MC ROTC scholarship and my teacher's are finishing my evals/ recs this week. Try to get your paperwork all in because you need everything for the boards. I know in CA the first board is in Sept.
Respectfully,

you are lucky... my recruiter contacted the references i had saved as placeholders in the app. including one that i decided to change! of course, this was long before i warned anyone that i was using them as a reference since the recruiter didn't bother telling me that he was contacting my references and i never even suspected anything like this could happen since i had not submitted the app yet!

i've warned before on this forum about the dangers of saving the nrotc app before your ready. the recruiters all seem to hover around the app. the moment anyone saves anything in the form, long before you submit it, they start buzzing around. LOL.

stupid question

I have a really stupid question. My son has been so focused on Navy - he has applied to USNA, USMA and NROTC. Can he apply for an army rotc scholarship as well?

Not a stupid question. However, depending on where you live, the MOCs may require him to choose between USNA and USMA in terms of a nom. Also, USN and USA careers are very different -- and can differ depending on whether you come out of ROTC or a SA. Make sure your son understands what his options are vs. what he is looking for before he makes his final decision.

Thank you. He wants to be a NAVY SEAL - first and foremost. If not, if he gets into WP or AROTC, he wants to be a special forces officer. Our research tells us that he could reach those goals from a SA or ROTC. We are correct, yes? Of course he could get there from going enlisted also, but I try to downplay that aspect because I want him to go to college first. There is so much info out there and it is so hard to sort thru all of it, I just thought I would make sure with you we are correct about his ultimate path.

Yes- the source of his commission is not going to hinder his opportunity to get into SF branch (Which is not an accession branch in the Army- no 2LTs in SF). If that's really want he wants- ought to be looking at taking and getting proficient in a language (like Arabic; Farsi; Chinese etc...- they don't have a burning need for Norwegian speakers or other western european languages, and there are plenty of native Spanish speakers out there now) and then make sure he gets tabbed after the basic course and perform as a stellar platoon leader. Your source of commission is not going to be much if anything of a factor in getting selected for SFQC.
