Hello,
I am currently a sophomore in college applying for a NROTC scholarship for the 2022 school year. I was wondering who can qualify for my references for my application? For example, can my teachers/coaches from my senior year of high school count (I graduated in 2020)? Or would I need to get recs from my college professors?

Additionally, I read that for the 2022 scholarship, they will only accept ACT scores from Dec 2019 and later. Is there any way to get around this, or do I need to go ahead to retest? The latest ACTs I took were in July and then September of 2019.

Are you in NROTC as a college programmer now? If so, your cadre is the best source of information. If you are not yet in NROTC, I am not sure that you can start as a junior.

I am currently at a SA, but for some personal reasons feel the need to go to school closer to home but still want the opportunity to commission after graduation (and thus I am pursuing NROTC). I believe there are 2 and 3 year NROTC scholarships that I would be eligible for as a 2nd semester sophomore.

You can probably do it. Best to ask the cadre at the detachment at the school to which you are seeking to transfer about scholarship questions. I have found the cadre at schools where DS is applying to be very responsive and helpful in answering questions.

@howdydoodee - from your original post, it sounds like you are thinking of applying for the national 4-yr scholarship. From the NROTC Website, Program Requirements (https://www.netc.navy.mil/Commands/Naval-Service-Training-Command/NROTC/Requirements/) :

  • Navy and Nurse Option Only
    • Students with 30 or more semester hours or students with 45 or more quarter hoursof college credit upon submission of the online application are not eligible for the NROTC National Scholarship. It is recommended that these students contact the Professors of Naval Science at the Host University's NROTC Unit to discuss other scholarship opportunities.
      • College credits do not count until an applicant has graduated high school and completed a term of college; then all college credits earned (prior to and after high school graduation) count towards the eligibility requirements.
      • If you are a high school graduate and complete a term of college prior to submitting your application, all college credits earned (in high school and in college) are counted towards the credit limit.
      • If you are a high school graduate and are currently attending/enrolled in college, all college credits anticipated to be earned during the application year (defined as April to December) will count towards the credit limit.
The first bullet above mentions contacting the PNS about other scholarship opportunities. These are the 2- and 3- yr non-affiliated scholarships you reference in your second post (info on these at this link: https://www.netc.navy.mil/Commands/Naval-Service-Training-Command/NROTC/Program-Info/#NSB Scholarship Opportunities Tab). The process/application is completely different than the national scholarship. These applications are shepherded by the NROTC unit, submitted at the end of the school year, and considered at the same time as the sideload scholarship board for College Programmers. As @NJROTC-CC suggests, reach out to the unit you are considering transferring to and they can talk you through this process.

@Go Dores!, thank you. After this semester, I will have about 54 college credit hours, so the 2 or 3 year scholarships are the best option for me. I was not aware that there was a separate application, so thank you for sharing that link. I will reach out to the unit I am planning on transferring to.
