I was accepted to Cal Poly SLO for this upcoming school year. I will be a freshman. I have looked into the school, but the only thing keeping me from committing is their lack of NROTC. They have AROTC and AFROTC, which I’ve heard are both great, but I’ve always been particularly interested with serving in the US Navy.

My question then is, is it possible for me to attend that school and join a NROTC program at a school elsewhere? I’ve tried to look into it, but haven’t found much on the topic.

Thank you in advance!

You can only participate in NROTC at one of the designated host units or cross town affiliates listed on the NROTC website. Cal Poly SLO is a great school, but it is not an NROTC school.

Congratulations, @KidForService00 !

Cal Poly SLO is regarded as the top of the food chain of the CSU system. I know folks who could not get into Cal Poly SLO who got into UC Irvine and UC Santa Barbara! You have a tough choice. I would focus on what is most important to YOU.
  • Is Cal Poly more important then serving in the Navy?
  • Have you visited Cal Poly in person? Have met with the cadre for AF and Army?
  • What do you want to do in the military and for how many years?
  • What career are you seeking after you are done in the military?
  • Can you do the same things in the AF or Army?
My DS began his journey all about the Marine Corps with USNA or NROTC/MO. He ended up as a "walk-on" Army cadet at a regional university and ended up with a 3 year (later upgraded to 3.5) AROTC scholarship. If you seek to serve, and are flexible, there are FAR worse places to end up than in Army or AF ROTC at SLO!
