I am a CMU alum, and had a few friends who did NROTC there. They all had wonderful experiences.
Reading through your other posts, I see that your son is passionate about being an engineer, but also wants to be an officer.
I don’t think I have to tell you that CMU has one of the top engineering programs in the country (so does Michigan, as I see your son has been accepted there as well).
Whether or not your son does end up receiving an NROTC scholarship, I would go to either CMU/Michigan and do college program NROTC (if I were in your DS’s shoes). Two main reasons:
1. My current mid at USNA often tells me that even though the mid life seems glorious, he often wishes that he could wear civvies and take a “normal” day off. Not saying that he doesn’t want to serve, but that some of his friends doing NROTC have flexibility that my DS just can’t have.
2. Judging from the schools that your DS has been accepted to (amazing engineering schools), I’m sure that he will thrive and get on scholarship once he gets to college, if he chooses to go that path.
Just my 0.02. My DS also was passionate about engineering, and if he got into CMU or Mich, he would’ve done ROTC there in a heartbeat!
