I have read through some prior threads but haven't found a definitive answer. I am curious as to whether or not this years NROTC scholarship award recipients will attend basic at Great Lakes?
Seems to have been changes made to this policy of late and I am looking for someone wiser than myself to clear it up for me.
Thank you in advance!

NROTC midshipmen do not attend basic training. The program they attend at Great Lakes is called New Student Indoctrination (NSI). It is a much different program than basic training. I have not heard anything indicating they would not be attending this and would be surprised if they move away from it.

I attended the first cycle of NSI this past summer and it was the most beneficial three weeks of my life. Seeing as I was a part of the first ever cycle I am sure that there will be many differences between what your DS goes through compared to what I went through. This program was initiated to basically train candidates and transition candidates to fourth class midshipman. There are many NROTC units across the country and they all have different ways of running their programs which is why the Navy wanted to have a program such as NSI. If you have any questions feel free to ask me.

Thank you! We are still in the hunt for appointments but he is happy to have the NROTC and a school in hand. If he or I have any questions we will be sure to reach out, I appreciate the offer. I am glad you had such a good experience. What school did you accept the scholarship to and how has your first year been so far?

I'm actually not on scholarship yet because I joined the unit as a college programmer. Fortunately for me they still sent me up to NSI which not many college programmers had the opportunity to do. As of now I am applying for the four year national scholarship and reapplying to the Naval Academy.

My first year has been challenging and I have grown a significant amount since the beginning of the semester. I'm currently taking 18 credits on top of ROTC and other activities which has taken a toll on my amount of sleep, but it is all worth it in the end. NROTC is a great experience and I love the atmosphere in our unit as well as the opportunities to get involved. I go to UMBC or the University of Maryland - Baltimore County, which is a stem-oriented school that offers challenging academics. Coming here and joining the unit has been the best decision of my life so far. However, I know that I will continue to reapply to the academy no matter how long it takes and my unit has been incredibly supportive of my decision to pursue this dream.

That sounds like a very full schedule indeed, very plebe like schedule which should help your application. Good luck to you, I know our DS will be busy and far from home, but trying to follow the path he has chosen. We just heard from 3rd MOC for noms so now we settle in for the long wait. I am super glad you are pursuing your dream and enjoying the experience.
